With So Many Doing The Keto Diet, Here’s Why You Should, Too

The keto diet is an eating plan that focuses on low-carb, high-fat, and protein foods. The idea is to get more of your calories from fat than from the carbs you eat. This diet depletes your built-up sugar reserves, which results in your body breaking down excessive body fat for energy. Your body then produces something called ketones which is a molecule the body uses for fuel. There are several types of keto diets, but we will just be going over the basics and the benefits and why you should hop on this bandwagon.

1. It Supports Weight Loss

The keto (ketogenic) diet can help promote excessive weight loss in several ways. This includes boosting one’s metabolism and reducing your appetite. This happens naturally with the type of food you consume. Your meals will typically consist of foods that are filling, and this reduces hunger-stimulating hormones. In 2013 a study found that people who followed a ketogenic diet for weight loss over the course of a year lost 2 pounds (lbs) more than people who followed a low-fat diet for that same year. Another study supported these findings. It found that, over the course of 6 months, people following a ketogenic diet lost 5 pounds more than those following a low-fat diet.

2. Improves Acne

There are plenty of things that cause a spike in acne in people. One of the most common links is to that of too much sugar being present in the diet. High blood sugar is never good. A diet that is high in processed and refined carbs alters the balance of your gut bacteria. This causes your blood sugar to rise and fall significantly, which is reflected in your skin health. When you reduce your carb intake during a keto diet, it can improve your acne.

3. May Reduce Risk Of Certain Cancers

Researchers are looking at the effects a keto diet might have in the prevention and treating of cancer. One study found a keto diet to be good alongside cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy in cases where people have certain types of cancer. It was suggested that this causes more oxidative stress in cancer cells than in other cells, which causes them to die.

Another study looked at its benefits in preventing cancer, stating that due to its blood sugar-lowering effects, the risk of insulin complications was much lower. Scientists believe that insulin is linked to the rise of certain cancers in the body.

Although studies are promising, they are limited. More research needs to be carried out to fully understand the potential benefits of this diet in treating and preventing cancer.

4. May Improve Heart Health

When following this diet, you must choose healthy foods. There are different fats, and choosing healthy fats, such as avocados, rather than less healthy fats, like pork rinds, can really help improve your heart health and reduce cholesterol.

A study conducted in 2017 found there was a significant drop in low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or bad cholesterol, and an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which is the “good” cholesterol.

High cholesterol increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, which is why good fats consumed while doing a keto diet are good for your heart.

5. May Protect Brain Function

A study in 2019 suggests that the ketones generate while doing this diet have neuroprotective benefits. This means that they have the ability to strengthen and protect the brain and nerve cells. This is why it is closely looked at to manage and possibly even prevent conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, etc.

6. Potentially Reduces Seizures

As we mentioned briefly earlier, the fat, protein and carb ratio present in a keto diet changes the way the body uses energy. This causes Ketosis, which is a metabolic process. During this process, the body uses ketone bodies for fuel. The Epilepsy Foundation suggests that ketosis might be able to reduce seizures in people with epilepsy. More research is still needed, but it does have some promising findings, especially in children.

7. Improves Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Symptoms

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal disorder. It can lead to excess male hormones, ovulatory dysfunction, and polycystic ovaries in women of all ages. A high-carb diet has been found to cause unpleasant effects in people with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, such as skin problems and weight gain. It has been found even to rectify hormone levels.
