Meet L3-37: The New Droid in Solo: A Star Wars Story

We attended the interview as a guest of Disney

One of my favorite characters in Solo: A Star Wars Story is the all-new droid L3-37 played by the talented Phoebe Waller-Bridge. While in Los Angeles earlier this month, I had the honor of meeting with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and got to talk to her about what it was like being a droid in the new hit film.

Before meeting with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, I had heard that she didn’t know very much about Star Wars before being cast for the film. When asking her about it, she said, “I did know about Star Wars, but I hadn’t seen any of the films. I think there’s like, five of us in the world.” She continued to share with us that she felt like it worked in her favor. “I was very loose in the audition with the idea of what a droid was,” said Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Since making the film, she has seen all of the movies and shared with us that she loves them all.

What was it like getting to dress-up like a droid? “Well, I had loads of fittings. I mean, the weirdest thing is, you get a kind of scan at the very beginning. I got a scan of my whole body, and then they’d build a complete replica of your body. Then they’d build this suit around it, so it fits perfectly. And so I had this suit, this green suit – a skin-tight, really attractive, green leotard, and then, on top of that, I had the kind of legs drilled onto me, and the arms, and the chest plate, and then the head,” said Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

“It was amazing. But it was heavy. It was the first time that they’d created a droid that kind of move properly and be more flexible, and I could move all of my joints. She’s a self-made droid, so she created herself to be…as flexible, bigger, faster, stronger, than any other droids that she would’ve met,” said Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

One thing that I love about L3-37 is how sassy she is. Phoebe Waller-Bridge shared with us that although she is not as sassy as her character in real-life, she dreams of being that way. “She’s like a social justice warrior, and she’s a droid with an agenda that goes beyond her own existence, and that’s very unique,” said Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

When preparing for her role as a droid in the film, she was ready to do all sorts of preparation. She had asked them if she should work-out so she could carry the suit stronger, but they liked her normal “awkward” walk.

Not to give a spoiler, but L3-37 does share feelings with another character in the film. “It’s a love story that surprises you. They are so rude to each other, and when people are rude to each other, and they can take it – that that’s a sign of love in itself?” said Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Don’t miss getting to know this sassy and fun new droid in the all-new Star Wars film Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters May 25th. Learn more about Solo: A Star Wars Story online, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
