Mercury Insurance Drive Safe Challenge: Immersive One-day Driving School

Sponsored by Mercury Insurance

Did you know that car crashes are the leading cause of death for 15 to 19-year-olds nationwide?

One thing that we have taken very seriously with our teenage son is driving education. When we were younger, we went to the DMV on our 16th birthday. Took the driving test, and then went out with our friends to celebrate. As parents, looking back, we were both not 100% ready to be driving independently on the road.

As our son approached his 16th birthday, we didn’t feel that he was ready to take his driving test. We decided to extend his driving education and recently brought him to a one-day immersive driving school hosted by Mercury Insurance at the Honda Center.

My son had attended the course last year, right after getting his permit. Now that we have scheduled his driving test for next month, we thought it would be great for him to re-take the course after practicing driving over the past year.

When my son first arrived at the class, they started with a classroom educational session. My son learned a lot during the classroom instructional. Then it was time to try the course.

All of the teens took turns getting into a car with a driving specialist who showed them what it is like to drive distracted. The driver had my son attempt to make a phone call while driving, and he was able to see how it impacted his driving capabilities.

After the four hour class, my son felt more confident about being able to drive safely than ever before.

“Having a driver’s license is about more than just being able to pass a test.” – Jay Johnston, parent participant

Distracted Driving Awareness Month starts next week, and it is a great time to talk with your teens about the importance of driving while not being distracted. Not only that, but also driving safely and abiding by state laws, including things like the Missed Rolling Re-Test issues. They will need to not miss these and get into trouble, along with getting distracted.

In this day of technology, it is so easy for kids to be distracted, and education is key to ensuring your teens are safe drivers. It is not only their life at risk on the road but also those of other families on the road around them. Learn more about Mercury Insurance online.

“Ensuring the safety and well-being of their children is every parent’s first priority,” said Mercury Insurance Vice President of Advertising and Public Relations Erik Thompson. “While we can’t be with our kids all the time, parents of teens going through the Drive Safe Challenge can rest a bit easier knowing their young drivers have the tools to help avoid potentially dangerous situations while driving.”
