“This Nutcracker is cracking good!” raved the New York Post when American Ballet Theatre premiered this delectable holiday favorite. As the lights dim and Tchaikovsky’s beautiful score fills the air, young Clara enters a dreamlike journey amid magical toy soldiers, mischievous mice, sparkling snowflakes and a glittering Christmas tree! With an impressive cast of more than 100 performers, ABT’s The Nutcracker features set and costumes by Richard Hudson (Tony Award winner, The Lion King), with choreography by ABT Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky. The Orange County Register praised it as a “… colorful, cinematic creation filled with spectacle, humor and eye-popping costumes.”

The American Pacific Ballet Company once again charms young and old alike this holiday season with a production of The Nutcracker. Featuring choreography by Mignon Furman, this beloved seasonal favorite is chock-full of lively children, scampering mice, beautiful dancers and more, not to mention a thrilling battle, magical transformations, a mysteriously “growing” Christmas tree, and delicately falling snow. Yuriko Kajiya and Jared Matthews, principals with the Houston Ballet, will perform the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.

This stunning version of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet by artistic director David Wilcox has been a Southern Californian holiday favorite for over 30 years years. Accompanied by full symphony orchestra, the Long Beach Nutcracker also boasts sparkling sets and costumes, a cast of over 200, dazzling pyrotechnics and magic effects — along with a special appearance by Rebel, Long Beach Ballet’s gorgeous white Arabian horse. The Los Angeles Times calls Long Beach Ballet’s The Nutcracker “opulent, family-oriented holiday entertainment,” and The Huffington Post raves that it “enchants children and their parents with spectacle and awe.”

A holiday mashup for the entire family, The Hip Hop Nutcracker is an internationally touring contemporary work set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless music. The Hip Hop Nutcracker will feature MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hop’s founding fathers, opening the show with a short set before rapping the introduction. Directed and choreographed by Jennifer Weber, The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a full-length production performed by a supercharged cast of a dozen all-star dancers, DJ and an electric violinist. Through the spells cast by the mysterious Drosselmeyer, Maria-Clara and her prince, Myron, travel back in time to the moment when her parents first meet in a nightclub. Digital scenery transforms E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story of a palace of sugarplums into a romance set in 1980s Brooklyn. The dance work celebrates love, community and the magic of New Year’s Eve, and is coming to the Long Beach Performing Arts Center.

Duke Ellington’s dazzling re-imagining of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker is sure to jazz up your holiday season, as conductor Carl St. Clair and the Pacific Symphony bring swing to the stage at the Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa. Along with selections from Tchaikovsky’s original ballet, you’ll groove to the Duke’s take on “Sugar Rum Cherry” and “Dance of the Floreadors” too. German pianist Markus Groh guest solos on Brahms’ dramatic Piano Concerto No. 2, and this festive concert kicks off with Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
