Olaf’s Frozen Adventure: Josh Gad’s Kids are Tickled that He’s Olaf

,We visited as a guest of Disney

Olaf, Anna, and Elsa are back this holiday season in an all-new story, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, that will debut in theaters on November 22nd before the feature animation film COCO. The 22-minute story features 40 new songs and is a beautiful story about holiday traditions. Earlier in the month, I went to the Walt Disney Animation Studios to learn more about the short film and to talk with the Producer Roy Conli, Directors Stevie Wermers-Skelton & Kevin Deters, and the voice of Olaf Josh Gad.

Before screening the short film, Stevie Wermers-Skelton shared with us that the story is about traditions. No matter where you are from or what your religion is, we all celebrate something during the holiday season. Olaf discovers that he doesn’t have any traditions, and sets out on a mission to discover what is the meaning of family traditions and tries to find out what his traditions are.

The film was more than I could have ever wanted out of a continuation of the Frozen story. It is heartfelt, full of love and is a timeless story that families will enjoy watching during the holiday season for years to come.

After watching Olaf’s Frozen Adventures, we talked with creators of the film about what are their favorite family traditions.

Kevin Deters said, “Ever since I was a kid we make our favorite cookie called chocolate crinkles. They are brownies rolled in powder sugar, and I eat them until I don’t feel well. We made them all the time when I was a kid and now my wife and three sons all make them together. We also have a second tree that is fully decorated from head to toe in star wars.”

Stevie Wermers-Skelton tradition is to decorate the tree. “My husband goes to the basement and gets all the stuff out, and then I get to do the fun stuff of decorating the tree. We have our two dogs who are supervising me, and I dress them up in Prep and Landing helmets and take pictures of them.”

Josh Gad said, “We celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas in my household. My favorite tradition is on Christmas eve I write a letter to my daughters (actually Santa Claus writes a letter to my daughters) I just oversee it…and sharing that tradition with them. I enjoy having them wake-up and open their presents from mommy and daddy and Santa – it’s my favorite thing to see that pure joy of them opening those gifts and what awaits them…its such a treasure to see that.”

Roy Conli and his family get a living Christmas tree every year. “We have been living in our house for 18 years, and we have 18 pine trees growing on our property – we are going to have to stop someday. We go out to the valley, and there is a place where you can get beautiful living Christmas trees, and it feels good.”

After talking about traditions, everyone wanted to know what it is like for Josh Gad’s daughters to know that their dad is Olaf. He said, “My kids are tickled by the fact that daddy’s Olaf. I read them Frozen books, and it is very surreal for them to have Olaf reading Olaf.”

Once we were done talking with the creators of Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, we went to a reception room at the studio where there were Frozen themed snacks, crafts, and an Olaf drawing lesson. Everyone enjoyed the reception before Roy Conli announced that Kate Anderson & Elyssa Samsel were going to sing for us the song that they wrote for Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, “When We’re Together.” It was the most magical experience ever.
