Black Star Canyon offers pleasant introductory trails for beginner hikers and families, and challenging experiences for seasoned trail users. Designated trails are available for self-guided access for hiking, biking and equestrian use by connecting various loops to offer extended exploration throughout the canyons. Take time to explore the local plant communities and beautiful scenery in easy 30-minutes walks or take in 7+ miles in a strong cardio trek. Event runs 8:00am – 2:00pm. Parking is limited on Black Star Canyon Road and carpooling is strongly encouraged. All participants are requested to check-in and complete their registration at the Registration Booth prior to accessing the trail system. If you are found to be on the trails without a day use pass you will be immediately directed back to the staging area.

Want to stand knee-deep in rows of blooming color? Want to refresh your senses while giving back to Nature? Sign up to help behind the scenes at the Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s one-of-a-kind Native Seed Farm in Irvine!  You will be harvesting seeds from native Spring wildflowers, like California Poppies and Arroyo Lupines. Tools and training will be provided, and no experience is needed.  After a quick ride to the Farm-site in an open-air safari vehicle, you will get introduced to some of our beautiful native plants, and then we’ll get to work! Join Park Rangers and Volunteers for an introductory archery class at the brand new archery range at Mile Square Regional Park. This one hour long class will introduce participants to the basics of the exciting sport or archery. The class is free, parking is $5 per vehicle. Equipment is provided. Participants must be at least 12 years old. Pre-registration is required. To allow us to accommodate as many participants as possible please only sign up for one class per person. Register online.

Family Bucket Garden – Family oriented, hands on gardening workshop that will get the whole family growing great food. Participate in a short talk on how to grow good food in containers, followed by attendees planting a ‘bucket garden’ to take home. Come learn everything you need to know about sustainable home gardening practices. Event runs 10:00am – 11:00am. The Garden Workshop series will feature various topics, including seasonal planting, tree health and care and succulents. Workshops are led by the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Master Gardeners of Orange County. Materials will be available for first 30 families; one bucket per family.

The Art Lab: Creation Stations – Play, create and explore at our self-directed creation stations. These hands-on activities emphasize divergent thinking, problem solving skills and innovation. Families with children of all ages are welcome. Event runs 10:00am – 4:00pm at the Great Park Artists Studios.

Enjoy nature with friends and family in Round Canyon. We hike along a fairly flat trail as we watch for red-tailed hawks and mule deer. The hike averages 2-3 miles round trip at an easy pace with a medium level of interpretation. This program is for participants who would like a slower-paced and level hike. Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes, and bring water for the hike. Be ready to enjoy the sounds and smells of the early evening. Event runs 6:00pm – 8:o0pm for ages 6 and up. Register online. The City of Los Alamitos Recreation & Community Services Department is proud to present the summer Music and Movies Event Series, presented by the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Commission. Enjoy four different Saturday nights of live music and an outdoor movie that is free to the community. Bring your neighbors, dust off the lawn chairs, and join the community for a night under the stars!  Live music from bands and local groups will entertain all generations from 6:30pm to 8:00pm with the movie to follow, beginning at dusk.  Each event will include raffle prizes, children activities, and food or refreshments for sale.  There will also be Food Trucks so be sure to come hungry! The Sunset Walk is 1.5 mile hike through the Headlands Conservation Area that takes approximately 1.5 hours.  Visitiors will learn about what critters come out to play at night and enjoy a summer sunset from atop Hilltop Conservation Park! Walk runs 7:00pm – 8:30pm. The walk requires RSVP either by email to [email protected] or by calling (949) 248-3527, and has a maximum capacity of 10 individuals. Please call the Nature Interpretive Center at (949) 248-3527 for more information.  Because it can be windy in the afternoon and evening, visitors are encouraged to bring an extra layer.
