Spring Garden Show
South Coast Plaza
3333 Bristol St.
Costa Mesa, CA 92626
backtonatives.org

Spring Garden Show runs April 24th – April 27th.
Landscaping with native plants conserves water – an increasingly scarce natural resource – and saves money. Using natives eliminates the need for pesticides, which harm beneficial insects and other animals, and reduces our exposure to toxic substances. Natives also require less mowing, pruning and fertilizing. A well planned native plant landscape even attracts birds and butterflies. Come purchase some native plants from Back to Natives at the Spring Garden Show at South Coast Plaza! Proceeds go directly to our environmental education and habitat restoration programs.

Come check out Back to Native’s demonstration garden at the Spring Garden Show at South Coast Plaza! Imagine a quaint Orange County beach cottage. Weathered surfboards, Adirondack chairs and a small rustic table are scattered on an outdoor wooden floor. A colorful beach towel, flip flops, coconut scented suntan lotion, and a few bottles of local beer are within reach. Music plays lightly in the background… Dick Dale or the Beach Boys. A California Sycamore tree provides shade for our pleasant outdoor room, and a hedge of locally native plants gives privacy for our beachy retreat. Native morning glory twines along a rustic wooden fence lined with silver California sagebrush and white sages. Drought tolerant coyote brush and yucca create interesting shapes, and swaths of sedges and strawberries show examples of easy to maintain native groundcover.

Spring Garden Show runs April 24th – April 27th. (See description under April 24th)

From 2pm – 3pm, Back to Natives Restoration will give a free presentation at the Spring Garden Show. Southern California has inspired people from around the globe for centuries. Movies, music, literature, fashion and even cuisine reflect our sunny, laid back lifestyle, yet our landscapes have traditionally been inspired by other places. As the population grows and resources like water become more and more scarce, Californians are turning to landscapes inspired by nature. Reginald Durant of Back to Natives will show some locally native, landscape quality plants that can help conserve water, eliminate the need for pesticides and fertilizers, and provide habitat for butterflies and birds. Humans have been living alongside Southern California’s native plants for centuries. Toyon was the first Hollywood celebrity with the native Tongva people, and Beach Evening Primrose basked on sun warmed sand dunes long before the first surfer caught their first wave. The presentation will include pictures of native ecosystems and the native plants that flourish in Southern California.
