Things to do in Orange County for OC Moms

Orange County Family Staycation at the Wyndham Irvine

Before life got busy, my husband and I would go away once a quarter for some R&R. Then we had our 2 children and it went from once a quarter to a yearly vacation. Between long work hours, school activities, birthday parties and of course the kid’s extracurricular activities who can get away? Once in a while we have a random day off and decide to go away, but after experiencing a 2 hour gridlock on the 5 each time, that option was scratched.

I was talking to my friends about our dilemma and one mom asked way we don’t have a staycation. In my mind staycation meant staying at home, cleaning and cooking while the rest of the family relaxed. My friend explained that sure we could do that or we could go away to a local hotel. I giggled at the thought of staying over at a hotel that was less than 10 miles from my house but decided to present the idea to my husband. He loved the idea and so we decided to have our first staycation experience.

We had heard that Wyndham Irvine had just revamping their hotel with a $10 million dollar renovation and decided to stay a night there. It is located in the heart of Orange County; seriously it took us 10 minutes to drive to Spectrum, 10 minutes to drive to South Coast and 10 minutes to drive to Fashion Island or the beach. On top of that they also have an indoor pool and hot tub as well as a multi-use sports court available for basketball, tennis and volleyball as well as a fitness center and sauna.

We were greeted by the friendly staff at check in and headed to our room. The hotel’s revamp gave the hotel a fresh and modern feel with art deco furnishings. I was obsessed with the carpet and would love to have a rug just like it. As we entered our room I noticed how bright and roomy it was. The Deluxe King corner suite with a sleeper sofa was perfect for a family of 4 and then I saw the wall of windows and the city view. Before I had a chance to lay on the bed, my kids found the soft bathrobes provided by the hotel and jumped onto the bed to read and check out the spectacular view.

Twenty minutes later, bathing suits on, we headed down to the indoor pool. We love indoor pools. They are always heated and regardless of the weather or time, you can swim. The only problem with an indoor pool is using that you can’t use the weather as an excuse to get the kids out. After giving my kids the line we’re leaving in 5 minutes for the 10th time we were finally able to go back to our room.

Once we were dressed and showered, I suggested that we hit the town for dinner but the kids said no, and wanted to stay at the hotel. Luckily The Paradise Restaurant was there to rescue. I’m not a big fan of hotel food. It’s usually the same five dishes and they often taste bland. Luckily The Paradise Restaurant isn’t like most hotel restaurants. I can honestly say we all enjoyed all our meals from the appetizer platter of coconut shrimp, beef skewers, calamari fritti with the most amazing jalapeno dipping sauce to the Hawaiian Ahi blackened with garlic noodles and grilled vegetables. The food was fantastic and I do plan on going there for dinner soon.

With dinner done we decided to walk around the complex and stumbled upon a sculpture garden in the middle of the business center. These amazing structures were chairs and benches and I made sure to have a little photo session the next day. After the walk we headed back to our room and got ready for bed. The city lights before us, I decided to leave the curtains open and we had a wonderful peaceful night’s sleep. There truly isn’t any more revitalization as a mini getaway; and with the ease of a staycation we will be having many more to come.

I’m an OC mom of two and photographer. I love living in Southern California and want to expose my children to all that it offers. I love taking my kids on adventures and capturing their every moment so much so that my kids find it odd if I don’t take their pictures. You can see my work on
