Happy Fourth of July! Talk about starting the week with a bang! Enjoy the many fun family celebrations and firework shows. Don’t forget to check out your local beach for junior ranger programs and other special summer activities during the week. Your local libraries have you covered with indoor activities and programs. Check out your city for free movies and concerts in the park during our lovely evenings. Enjoy your week!

Aquarium of the Pacific (July)

Discounted Late Nights – Enjoy the Aquarium of the Pacific with special extended hours. The entire Aquarium will be open, except Lorikeet Forest. Admission after 5:00 p.m. is just $14.95 for adults and seniors, and children (3-11). Watch the nighttime activities of our animals, touch a shark, and enjoy the beautiful evening lighting of the Aquarium’s architecture. Please note that Café Scuba may not be open on all nights but the Coffee Cart will be open in those cases. Event runs 5:00pm – 8:00pm. This week the Discounted Late Nights are as follows:

Grunion Runs – Come explore the beach after hours as you hunt for the elusive grunion. Grunion Runs are a cherished part of Huntington Beach history and a great way to spend an evening with family and friends. We have 4 scheduled grunion runs this summer: June 7 at Huntington State Beach, June 23 at Bolsa Chica State Beach, July 7 at Huntington State Beach, and July 21 at Bolsa Chica State Beach. Space is limited as this is a popular event and you must RSVP in order to participate in the program. Please email [email protected] to RSVP your group.

  • Thursday, July 7: Grunion Run

Junior Rangers – Become a Junior Ranger! These 45 minute programs are designed for rangers ages 7-12. Program topics include animal life, ecology, history, recycling, safety & survival and so much more! Enjoy crafts, games, and learn a few new facts. With every program your ranger attends, they earn their way to cool prizes. This program is completely FREE and a good excuse to spend your day at the beach. Junior Rangers are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10 am starting June 22nd in the Visitor Center at Bolsa Chica State Beach except on July 4th.  If you would like more information, please contact [email protected].

Campfire Programs – Cancelled this summer due to continued construction at the Bolsa Chica Campfire Center.

Junior Rangers – Join a Park Ranger for a fun introduction to the ecology of Crystal Cove State Park in our weekly Junior Ranger programs. This children’s nature program is a favorite in State Parks and allows visitors ages 7-12 to earn a badge. Junior Rangers meets on Tuesday mornings 7/5 & 7/26 and on Friday mornings 7/8, 7/15, & 7/22 from 10-11am. Meet at the Berns Amphitheater (PCH inland at stoplight School-State Park, follow signs towards the campground.) Come for the program, stay for the day. $15 day-use parking fee.

Wednesday, July 6: Community Days – Crystal Cove Alliance is hosting Community Days in the Historic District’s Education Commons on Wednesdays July 6, 13, 20, & 27 from 10-4. Step back in time as the Education Commons comes to life with fun, historical activities for the whole family.  Learn to water color try your hand at a traditional craft, enjoy a historic radio show, or explore the science of Crystal Cove State Park. Check out Cottage #13, the Film and Media Center, and Cottage #22, the Park and Marine Research Facility. Park in the Los Trancos lot (PCH inland at stoplight Los Trancos then walk across the street or take the shuttle.) $15 day use fee

Festival of Arts Fine Art Show (July 5 – August 31)

Nearly 150 of Southern California’s finest artists will have their work on display at this prestigious, long-running event. It includes several attractions for kids. On Mondays from 11 am-12 pm, there will be an Art and Story Time for children 5 and younger. Youths 5-12 can do an art workshop Mon.-Fri. at 11 am & 1 pm ($15-$25 per class). Family Art Day (12 pm-3 pm, July 16) offers a host of special creative activities for parents and children to enjoy. Cost of admission is $8 adults (weekdays), $12 adults (weekends), ages 12 and under are free.

Sawdust Festival (June 24 – August 28)

A Laguna Beach tradition for 50 years, the Sawdust Festival’s Summer Show serves as a showcase for more than 200 local artisans. Come and see all the diverse artwork as well as check out the art demonstrations and workshops. Admission is $9.00; $4 children 6-12. Festival runs Friday, June 24 – Sunday, August 28, 2016, open 10:00am – 10:00pm. See website for more details.
