Part One: Bullying 101 for Parents

OC Mom Blog Note: This is the first in a two-part series that discusses bullying, and how parents can better protect their children.

At one time or another we’ve all experienced it: bullying. As a parent, the stinging words, or flying punches can create frustration and helplessness. So, how can parents arm themselves when it comes to bullying?

Types of bullying can range from physical, verbal, emotional, racist, sexual, to cyberbullying.

According to the American Psychological Association (2004), the most common problems that occur due to bullying are: lowered self-esteem, higher rates of depression, anxiety, feelings of loneliness, suicidal ideation and lower rates of school attendance.

Kate Baxter, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist treats children and teens in her Laguna Hills office for bullying. “Most victims fear their bully, feel unsupported, alone, and have self-esteem problems and anxiety,” she said.

Adding to the anxiety for both parents and children is cyberbullying. Joy Robinson, founder and executive director of Girls Support Network, which is dedicated to empowering middle school girls, believes that cyberbullying is the biggest threat to children and teens.

“It used to be that you were bullied on the playground…now, you can be publically humiliated on the World Wide Web,” she explains.
