Perfect At-Home Manicure and Pedicure
Just in time for our week of sunshine! Finding Calm in the Chaos from The Whole Purpose is back to share with us steps for the perfect at-home manicure/pedicure until we can indulge with a visit to the salon again.
Since we have been sheltering at home and several “self-maintenance” items have fallen to the wayside, we all could use a little care. The Whole Purpose called their expert team at Pretty Women NYC to get professional help on achieving a salon like mani and pedi at home.
Check out their tips on home manicures and pedicures and enjoy the fruits of your labor by buffing up those nails. You’ll feel better and it just might give you some extra pep in your step.
Steps for the perfect at-home manicure/pedicure
Clean and buff nails
To get a good at-home mani – do as the pros do by spending as much time prepping as polishing! Using nail polish remover, wipe all nails removing any residual polish for clean, dirt and oil-free nails. File the nail gently in one direction as needed working to get the shape you desire – square, round or oval. Lastly, buff the top and sides of your nails lightly with a nail buffer.
Prep nails
Prep your nails with a cuticle remover and gently push back using a cuticle stick. Avoid cutting your cuticles as they help protect your nails from bacteria. Apply cuticle oil to moisturize and soften. You can use this time as an opportunity to grab your favorite hand cream and give your self a massage for soft hands. Take a cotton swab and apply acetone to each nail to ensure it is clean and ready for polish!
Apply a base coat and allow to dry
This helps hydrate and protect nails from chipping.
Apply your first coat of polish
Apply one thin coat of a nail polish color of your choice. Be sure to cover the entire nail from the cuticle to the corners of your nails. By applying this first thin coat, it makes the second coat application easy! Second coat of color. Once your first thin coat is dry, apply your second coat. You may need another coat for light/sheer colors but remember to keep it thin.
Finish with a top coat
After your second coat is dry, apply your favorite top coat to ensure maximum protection against chipping or breaking. The topcoat also gives your nail a shine that seals the deal.
For a spa pedi
All you need is some warm water, Epson salt, and essential oils. We recommend Lavender or Lemon as they have natural relaxing and antioxidant properties – and smell delightful. Soak your feet for 10-15 mins – grab a book and sit back and relax.
Once you are ready to tackle the pedi – dry your feet and use the same steps as you would do for your fingers. Ensuring a clean, gorgeous pedicure.
