We attended as guests of the museum.

There’s a new Cafe in town!

Opening of new Pretend City Cafe

More precisely, a new Pretend Cafe, that is.

Pretend City Children’s Museum, an all time OC favorite among kids and Moms alike, has, as many know, a whole city full of imaginative and educational buildings and activities.  From the warf to the beach, and the gas station to the dentist office, there is a plethora of spaces for kids to explore through purposeful play and hands-on learning experiences.

Kids learning in the Pretend City Cafe

What some may not realize is that every quarter Pretend City intentionally introduces a brand new Cafe exhibit as part of their Developing and Discovering Diversity program, which promotes the education of culinary and cultural diversity. By periodically changing the Pretend Cafe, the smallest of patrons are exposed to new and exciting foods and cultures, all in a fun and playful environment. The Cafe has showcased Greek and Italian foods, among others, and this quarter is pleased to collaborate with the Mexican Consulate to bring Taqueria de Anda’s fresh ingredients and authentic flavors to Pretend City.

Taqueria de Anda

On our visit we learned about many intricacies of Pretend City and their well-researched philosophy on playtime. We enjoyed the ribbon cutting on the new Cafe, special art activities – including make your own piñata and a tortilla sensory station – music, and food from none other than Taqueria de Anda. The aspect that stood out to me is how committed and intentional Pretend City is about incorporating culture into the play experience. In supporting the culture of the quarterly Cafe, they also revamp the Pretend House on the same time schedule to include a new “family” from the highlighted culture. In keeping everything authentic Pretend City chooses an actual family from the highlighted culture from right here in Orange County. Pretend City personnel interview this family and spend a whole day learning about their culture, and as such can truly make the story of the culture come alive in the Pretend House.

One of the aims of Pretend City is to bridge various cultures and as such help children develop bicultural competence. Their commitment to bring new and authentic cultural experiences to the youngest of Orange County, is admirable and sure to leave a lasting legacy with all who spend time playing there.
