Recipe Substitutions for Apple Sauce Made Easy

Recipe Substitutions for Apple Sauce Made Easy

We are all trying to make healthy choices in regards to what we eat.  Not only is it better for us, but it is important that our children learn from our example as well.   I love baking…and sweets…and baking some more; with simple substitutions, we can make some of our sweet treats a little healthier for our family.

Apple sauce can be used in place of cooking oil and helps lower the fat content of recipes while increasing vitamin and antioxidant conent.  Next time you are making brownies, try adding 1/2 cup of apple sauce and 1/2 cup of oil in place of a cup of oil.  It is important to remember that with each recipe, the results with substitutions can vary.  If you replace 1/2 cup of apple sauce and the recipe turns out well, try 2/3 cup apple sauce and 1/3 cup oil.

Substituting apple sauce can potentially deliver additional benefits like reducing the amount of sugar needed in a recipe due to it being naturally sweet.  However, be sure to use “no sugar added” apple sauce in your recipes.

A few final tips for you when making recipe substitutions…

1. Do not overmix – lower fat ingredients means less mixing is needed.  Over mixing, as with any recipe, can make the final result tougher.

2. Check your baking time earlier than normal.  Baked goods with apple sauce require less time so insert the toothpick and if it comes out clean, it is ready!
