Renegade Dirty Series

On Saturday, May 17th Sandra and I had the fun opportunity to escape the smokey air in Orange County and head up to San Dimas to participate in Renegade Dirty Series Racing’s 3 Mile Trail Run Challenge at Bonelli Park. The trail run was part of Saturday’s XTERRA Off-road Tri- and Du-athalons. Since neither of us had mountain bikes and the appropriate training for an off-road tri or du, we chose to participate in the running portion of the day’s events.

Beautiful day for a race

Beautiful day for a race

There’s a completely different vibe at an off-road/trail event when compared to the road races that we typically participate in. It’s in some ways more relaxed, but in others more intense. Trail running is a very different sport than road racing. The hills present a completely different challenge when you’re on a dirt trail or even a single-track. Going up those hills is tough, but going down is very technical. You can’t just let it go and run downhill – you’d end up going end-over-end or sliding and rolling only to leave with some painful mementos from the day’s events. However, the view from the top of a trail is nothing short of amazing. It certainly makes it worth the effort.

This race was the kick-off for Renegade Racing’s Dirty Series that takes place in Tustin in June, July, and August. For us residents of the OC, this race series is convenient as it is local. Also, they are held Thursday evenings so you can simply head on over to Cedar Grove Park in Tustin after work and get a great trail run in. With registration you get your choice of a Tshirt or BBQ dinner too! Additional dinners & Tshirts can be purchased for only $5 so you can bring the whole family for a fun picnic in the park. Or, register the whole family and make some great memories as you get fit together while completing the 5 mile course.

Another great benefit is that this trail series helps raise funds for the WE ROCK program that trains OC teens to run the OC marathon. So, not only is this a fun & challenging event that the whole family can participate in at some level – but you’re helping fund an amazing teen program too!
