Ready to rock this trail run!

Renegade did a great job choosing Peters Canyon as the venue for their summer trail series. The trail run is a 5-mile loop through the wilderness park that begins on a paved path and then winds through a moderately technical trail that traverses some hills that will not only give you a good workout, but test your footing and balance. While the loop was the same as the first run that took place June 19th, this time runners completed the loop in a clockwise direction (whereas in June we went counter-clockwise). It’s amazing how changing the direction can affect the difficulty of a run. What was uphill last month, was now downhill and vice-versa. Changing up the loop made it interesting so we won’t have the same route for all three races.

One of the nice things about this trail series is that it takes place in the evening with a 6:15pm start time. This allows for people who work to be able to make it out for the race and while the weather is still warm, it’s not too warm for a run. They also have a kids obstacle course so the event is super family friendly. Renegade is a friendly, laid back but professional organization. This time around they had more sponsors and that made it fun. Hubert’s Lemonade and Diabolo were there handing out free samples of their yummy beverages as was Winder Dairy with the yummiest chocolate milk you’ve ever tasted. With your race entry you could choose between a BBQ dinner or a race T-shirt. You can get both for only $5 more. While the first race had a better BBQ selection, the set up was basically the same. As with last month, there was a raffle, so you wanted to hang out afterwards to eat, relax and hopefully win a cool prize. This time  great music was provided by AMP Radio FM 97.1 which added to the great summer vibe.

It’s always fun to meet new people on the trail. Sandra ran part of the race with this 84-year-old man. He started running 30 years ago when he was 54 and he’s in great shape. There was a little girl who finished around the same time also, she was only 10 years old. It just goes to show that running is a sport for every age and that you’re really never too old or young to start living a healthier lifestyle.

Overall, this was a fun race to do on a summer week night. A great event to bring the whole family to with a nice relaxing vibe. I love that the event supports the youth intervention program We ROCK (We Run Orange County’s Kids) that trains OC youth to run a full marathon. There were a lot of WeROCK participants at the event too, so these kids truly are learning to love running and are maintaining the skills they learned this past school year in the program.

See you on the trail!

Don’t miss out on the last of the Summer Trail Runs – it’s less than a month away! They do have on-site registration, but it’s always better to have that all taken care of beforehand. Use the link at the top of the post for all the info you need and to sign up.
