In the film “Cinderella,” Richard Madden portrays Prince Charming. Unlike in the original version of “Cinderella,” Richard Madden shows us a whole new side of the Prince. “I wanted to make someone who has a bit more depth to him and had a sense of humor,” said Madden.

Cinderella and the Prince are very much defined by their parents, and it was important to Madden to show that side of the Prince. In the original “Cinderella” we got to see Cinderella’s relationship with her parents and how that molded her into the woman she became, but we didn’t see that side of the Prince. “We wanted to see him as a friend, a soldier, and also a Prince to Cinderella. We got to see him as a son, and that was really important,” said Madden.

Instead of seeing a damsel in distress that is saved from a night and shining armor, we get to see the story in a whole new way. “Cinderella would have been fine even if the Prince had not shown up. What’s important about this film is that it’s about two young people bringing out the best in each other. The old-fashioned view was probably not the best thing to be teaching young girls,” said Madden.

The film is not just for girls, and Madden delivers a great message to young boys who are watching the film. “Hopefully for young boys watching it’s going to be good. I learned about love, death, loss, grief and joy from original Disney films. Hopefully we can do that with this film but in a more modern way,” said Madden. When developing his character as the Prince Madden said, “I wanted to find a man who would be worthy of her affection, and a good person so that young boys who are watching will grow up with respect for women and an awareness of the people around them.”

While Madden developed a whole new Prince for young boys to look up too, he also wanted his costumes to maintain a masculinity. When working with Sandy Powell, who designed the costumes for the film, he spent a lot of time talking to her about how he wanted the costumes to have a strong masculinity. Then when he arrived on set, there was a white costume covered with sprinkles and glitter for him to wear. “Once I put on the costume and stepped out into the ballroom, it was masculine and gave me a regal feel. It helped with my posture, made me stand up strong and feel masculine,” said Madden.

One of my favorite scenes in the film was when the prince was at the grand ball dancing with Cinderella. I felt like I was right in the story. Madden gave such an incredible performance that I assumed he had been dancing his entire life. Madden said, “I am not a naturally gifted dancer. I had to train 3-4 days a week for over three months. I think that the Prince really enjoyed dancing and was good at it, so I wanted to make it look like that was the case. Also, so I could focus on my acting and not thinking about my feet so much.”

Finally, we couldn’t finish talking with Madden without asking him what it was like working with Lily James, and he said, “A joy every day. She couldn’t be a more perfect Cinderella. She is kind, gentle, loving, giving and fun.”
