A Road to a Healthier me with Shakeology

In December I realized that in 8 short months I would turn 40.
I’m actually excited about turning 40. The last big birthday for me was 35 so 40 is a woo hoo but then I realized that with 40 comes a lot of changes. Changes, yes changes. Remember how at 15 you could eat all you wanted and wouldn’t gain a pound, or at 20 pulling all-nighters and then still be all good or even at 30 have a kid and have your body kind of bounce back? Well, all that changes in your 40s. Yup that’s right, once you hit 40 your metabolism slows down, your energy levels lessen and eating a salad causes you to gain 20 pounds. Woo hoo 40 here I come.
So to help my body prepare for 40 I have begun incorporating a new outlook on food, exercise and life in general.
My first step to a healthier me was movement. I made a pledge to myself to actually move and get my heart rate up at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes. It could be a simple walk across the street to the grocery store, going to the gym and doing cardio or weights for 30 minutes, turning the radio on and embarrassing my kids with my killer running man/ cabbage patch moves or even intense cleaning of the house. Whatever I do I need to get my butt off the couch and move it for the minutes. The next step was to reduce my calorie intake, not so easy for me. I love food and that is how I gained 30 pounds in 7 years. I love the taste of it, I love the texture, I love the smell, I love to eat it and I don’t love to stop. So in order for me to reduce my calorie intake I needed support. In came Kelsea Pratt-Acosta. Kelsea is an amazing working mom who lost 75 pounds the right way. To help others, she started a support group on Facebook called Fit for Life. Kelsea’s journey is one of working hard; eating right and making it work. She lost the weight the old fashion way and just like me struggled with putting herself first. Once she had her daughter, she didn’t have time to go to the gym or cook meals at home. She ate out all the time and did little to no exercise. Over time she gained weight and in August 2012 she weighed just over 300lbs. If her story sounds familiar it’s because you have lived it, I have lived it and you currently know someone who is living it. So how did she lose 75 pounds? SUPPORT! That and as she puts it 80% of weight loss is what you eat 20% is exercise but support and a community who is on the same path as you helps.
Once I joined Kelsey’s group she’s turned me onto Shakeology.
What is Shakeology? Shakeology is a top of the line meal replacement shake developed and created by Beachbody. The Shake is made up of over 70 high quality, all natural ingredients, and unlike most meal replacement shakes, it high in protein. Now trust me I hate shakes, I don’t drink chalk and think the stuff is gross. When she told me about it I said no thank you I won’t try it and if I do and write about it I will be honest about it. So here is the deal with the shake. I have only tried the chocolate one and I love it. Here is how I made it. I get a scoop of the powder (160cal), a cup of whole milk (160cal) ½ banana (60 cal) and blend in puree mode in my Cuisinart for about 2 minutes so that it’s super fluffy.

The texture is that of an In-n-Out milkshake and it tastes creamy and chocolatey with a banana after taste due to my banana add on which you don’t have to do I just do because I love bananas. I like mine super cold so I also like to add ½ a cup of crushed ice and puree it another 2 minutes.

It truly tastes great and curbs my cravings for sugar.
