Romantic Getaway at Island Hotel

We stayed as a guest of the property

When was the last time that you had a weekend getaway with your husband? If you’re anything like me…it’s been awhile. As my husband and I approached our 17 year wedding anniversary, we planned a romantic getaway at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach.

When the kids got out of school last Friday, the weather was perfect for an afternoon swim. Since their Grandparents were not picking them up until 4pm, I surprised them by taking them to the hotel to swim. We checked into the hotel, and were advised to take the elevator up to visit the Island Club. Upon entering the Island Club, the kids were in heaven and wished that they were going to have the opportunity to stay with us when they saw the all-you-can-eat candy and treats. With their pockets full of candy and a sweet drink in their hand, we left the Island Club, and made our way to the serene outdoor swimming pool.

My two younger children spent the afternoon swimming in the warm swimming pool under the tall palm trees while my older son relaxed in a plush lounge chair with me. We snacked on chips and guacamole, and it wasn’t long before their Grandparents arrived to pick them up for the weekend.

Shortly after the children left, my husband joined me for what would be one of the most relaxing evenings we have had together in a long time. We sipped on a glass of champagne by the pool before retreating to our secluded room to get ready for the evening. In our room there was a plate with all of our favorite cheeses and a bottle of wine. We devoured the rich cheeses while admiring the majestic panoramic views of Orange County.

In a blink of an eye, it was time for us to make our way down to Oak Grill for dinner. Before we took our seat at a table on the outdoor patio, we had a cocktail and appetizers at the Aqua Lounge. The lounge is a relaxing place to have a cocktail and appetizers before dinner, and a hip happening place for the young professionals of Orange County to gather later in the evening.

During dinner, we quickly learned why Oak Grill has become one of the most popular places to dine in Orange County. Chef Marc Johnson has created a menu that is bold with flavors and light on sauces. Every dish that we savored during our dinner was fresh, delicious and like nothing we had before in Orange County. Just when we thought that our dinner could not possibly get any better, the pastry chef, Andy de la Cruz, satisfied all of our sweet culinary desires. It was the perfect ending to our day and a memorable Anniversary dinner.

The next morning we had light breakfast at the Island Club before my husband walked me down to the spa for a relaxing treatment. All of my stresses from being a mom were washed away as I relaxed in the tranquil spa. I was able to reconnect with my mind, body and soul – satisfying all my vacation desires.

We ended our time together with lunch by the outdoor pool before returning home refreshed, relaxed and ready to take on parenting with our children. With the Newport Beach Film Festival starting today through April 30th, it is the perfect time to plan a romantic getaway with your husband. Get tickets to a premier film, and then end your evening with a romantic night at the Island Hotel. Reservations for the hotel are available online, and Newport Beach Film Festival showtimes vary throughout the week. Island Hotel is conveniently located right across the street from Fashion Island at 690 Newport Center Drive in Newport Beach.
