Saving Mr. Banks Will Captivate Mary Poppins’ Fans

I walked into the screening for “Saving Mr. Banks” after watching a preview for the movie on my iPhone in the car. I walked in expecting a moving about the making of “Mary Poppins.”  What I got was so much more than that.

Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson brought two complex characters to life in a way that I don’t think could have been done by any other actors.   The plot of the story has deep dark twists flashing back from Pamela Travers childhood in Australia, to the Disney movie executives trying to adapt “Mary Poppins” to a silver screen character with Mrs. Travers insulting everyone at The Walt Disney Studios with whit and hilarious sarcasm.  Bradley Whitford as Don DaGradi was superb as Mrs. Travers broke down his every thought and jingle with the tongue-lashing.

Walt Disney and Pamela Travers are both going through their own personal struggles with “Mary Poppins,” while “Mary Poppins” is “family” to Mrs. Travers, Mr. Disney wants “Mary Poppins” as Disney property.  When the two finally have a meeting of the minds and Mrs. Travers hands “Mary Poppins” to Walt with trust – the rest is history.  To watch Ginty begin the process of forgiveness and healing, was heart warming and tearful at the same time.

The supporting cast pulled all parts of this movie together in outstanding performances, Colin Ferrell especially pulled at my heartstrings.  Paul Giamotta as Ralph the driver was the breath of fresh air in this intensely emotional, funny, heart warming and wrenching film.

I would not recommend this film for children under age 12 because it does deal with some very adult situations.  This is the perfect film during the holidays to bring back the nostalgia of all of our childhoods Walt Disney on the tube on “The Wonderful World of Disney”, one of my favorite Disney films ever “Mary Poppins,” and Disneyland “E” Tickets.

For a chance to travel in Walt’s Footsteps with a rare behind the scenes Adventures By Disney trip for four to Walt Disney Studios and the Disneyland Resort, tweet using #SavingMrBanksSweeps telling your friends YOU SAW IT FIRST.  Follow @DISNEYPICTURES  on Twitter for more information and official rules.

“Saving Mr. Banks” is currently playing in select theaters, and will be open nationwide on Friday, December 20th.
