The Science of Gingerbread at Discovery Science Center

With the holidays around the corner and my kids going on break, I always try to keep the joy of the season by doing fun activities. One of my family’s favorites is the Discovery Science Center (DSC). Year round the “Cube” located right off the 5 fwy (literally you can see a giant black cube off the 5) has amazing exhibits and educational fun. Make sure to plan for a full day of fun, because it will be hard for you to try and get your kids out of this place. The DSC also has a Taco Bell restaurant on site so you can enjoy a nice lunch between exhibits.

On our visit Thursday night, we were lucky to experience two fabulous exhibits; The Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not and Science of Gingerbread. We were also very fortunate as Boudin SF catered the event that night. They provided variety of salads and sandwiches, which were fresh and tasty.

As we walked into the main lobby of the DSC, the aroma of gingerbread took over our senses. Before us were hundreds of beautifully designed creations from houses, to castles, a Discovery Cube and one of my favorites, a tribute to The Beatles!

As my family wondered from display to display in amazement I noticed a chair ten feet tall. The chair was just the beginning of all the fun that Ripley’s had in store for us. We crawled through a life-size model of a snake, measure up against Robert Wadlow (the world’s tallest man, who grew to 8 feet 11 inches tall) and were captivated by the jaws of a prehistoric shark.

We continued our journey and designed our own house and with the help of the wonderful staff at the DSC made snowflakes. The path wound around the exhibits and to our surprise we landed in the North Pole! What a wonderful treat it was to have the opportunity to see Santa and snap a family picture.

Candy canes in hand we headed upstairs to the Gingerbread Derby. What a brilliant activity!!! The kids were able to make race cars on gingerbread cookies and candies with a gummy bear as a driver. Once your car is complete, you can take it to the downhill race course. My daughter wanted peanut butter cups as wheels whereas my son opted for peppermint lifesaver and jelly beans; the race began and after 3 tries my son won 2-1. He did his victory dance and we headed out to the Eco Challenge.

The DSC and OC Waste and Recycling have partnered to bring an environmentally themed exhibition to teach our little shoppers on how to become eco-friendly. The exhibit is interactive and demonstrates the impact that various products and packaging materials have on the environment. If your child makes good shopping choices, they get the honor of having their picture displayed on the TV screen wall alongside their Super Eco-Shopper peers.

Make sure you head out to the Discovery Science Center and visit the exhibits before time ends. The Science of Ripley’s Believe It or Not and Science of Gingerbread are currently running through January 5th. Enjoy!
