The Sound of Music has always been one of my all time favorite movies that I enjoyed sharing with my daughter so when I heard that the musical production was coming to the Segerstrom, I was filled with excitement to be able to have her see a live version!

The visual aspect of the film is just amazing, and I wasn’t sure of how they would translate the beautiful scenery in the film to the stage, but this brand new production of The Sound of  Music is directed by three-time Tony Award Winner Jack O’Brien, and it is absolutely remarkable.  According to director Jack O’Brien, “The Sound of Music has been in our ears for decades, but it might be time to look once more, and more closely, at this remarkable work, which I feel, begins to reveal itself as deeper, richer, and more powerful than ever.  It’s no longer “your mother’s” familiar Sound of Music.”

From the opening scene, you are transfixed and transported back to the small Austrian town.  The talented team of set designers has outdone themselves and transport you back to the small Austrian town.  The way the sets move and take you from the hall of the church Abbey to the hills of the Austrian mountains, to the beautiful lakeside Von Trapp villa; you forget you are in a theater and truly feel you are in this beautiful countryside.

It is the cast that brings this beloved Rodger’s & Hammerstein musical to life.  Ben Davis as the stern, yet ever so charming Captain Von Trapp;  Melody Betts as The Mother Abbess, Merwin Foard as Captain Von Trapp’s best friend, Max, Teri Hansen as Elsa Schrader.  The amazing and talented actors that are the Von Trapp children; Paige Sylvester as Liesel, Jeremy Michael Lanuti as Friedrich, Ashley Brooke as Louisa, Austin Levine as Kurt, Iris Davies as Brigitta, Kyla Carter as Marta and sweet Audrey Bennett as Gretl.  Introducing Jack O’Brien’s brand new discovery, Kerstin Anderson as Maria Rainer.  Kerstin brings Maria to life with a voice that brings you to tears every time she sings.

The musical brings a bit more humor to it which is refreshing. Maria and the Von Trapp Family will bring audiences to their feet with all your favorite songs as “The Sound of Music”, “My Favorite Things, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”,  “So long, farewell”, “Do-Re-Mi”, “Edelweiss”, and much more.

This new production of The Sound of Music is sure to delight all who see it.  My daughter and I left with a newfound love for The Sound of Music.
