Showdown at Sherwood Country Club

As you make your way up the winding road to Sherwood Country Club, you have no idea of the beauty that awaits you past the iron gates.  Sherwood Country Club is located in the hills of Thousand Oaks, and it is surrounded by the Santa Monica Mountains and trees, trees and more trees.

Jack Nicklaus said,”This was one of the most magnificent pieces of land I’ve had the opportunity on which to design a golf course. It is rare to see a piece of property that is so private, with so much natural beauty. There isn’t another golf course in the World that has a more beautiful tree complex than Sherwood.”

Sherwood Country Club is the site of the PGA Tour Champions PowerShares QQQ Championship.  The top 72 PGA Tour Champions met here over the weekend for a grueling three days.  The top 54 players advanced to the second round on Saturday, and then the top 36 went head to head for the Final Round on Sunday.  Not only did these fantastic players have to go up against each other, but they were also dealing with Mother Nature as she opened the skies and dropped rain on the first half of the day.  The greens were very soft and wet which can make play harder.  Three things can happen to the course when it rains; slow green speeds, make the rough heavier and decreased driving distance.  These amazing players rose to the occasion and brought their best game to battle it out for the title on Sunday.

Frontier Communications was one of the sponsors for this amazing weekend of golf and was offering complimentary tickets for all Veterans, Military Retirees, and active/non-active service members and their families.  Frontier Communications sponsored the Patriots Patio that was located on the 9th hole and offering spectacular views of the greens and beautiful Santa Monica Mountains as a backdrop. Service Members were able to watch the excitement on the 9th hole up close, while they enjoyed some great food and beverages and some even more incredible golf.  Some of the Veterans I talked with said they were not about to let a little rain stop them from coming down and watching golf.  They said they were honored and thankful that Frontier Communications gave them the opportunity to spend the day at Sherwood Country Club for the PowerShares QQQ Championship.

Frontier Communications is not only a leader in the telecommunications industry but they are a company that cares about our Military Service Members, Veterans, and their families.  “Frontier Communications is an award-winning Veteran Employer and proud to support individuals who serve our Nation.  Veterans, Reservists, and their spouses represent over 1 out of every 10 Frontier Employees.  Frontier is a proud member of The Military Spouse Employment Partnership, The 100,000 Jobs Mission, The Employer Partnership of the Armed Forces, Honor and Remember and Joining Forces.”

By mid-afternoon, the clouds parted, and the remaining 34 PGA Champions were able to finish an incredible day of golf.  When all was said and done, it came down to 2 guys; Colin Montgomerie and Tom Pernice Jr.   Tom Pernice Jr.’s clutch par on the 18th hole was enough for him to hold off Colin Montgomerie by one shot and clutch the PowerShares QQQ Championship title.

The top 54 from Showdown at Sherwood will advance to the Dominion Charity Classic in Richmond, VA, next week and the top 36 from Richmond, will head to Scottsdale, AZ for the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
