Spicing Up Your New Year

For many Mom’s in Orange County, the New Year often brings a focus on health, nutrition, exercise and weight loss. According to some experts, one of the easiest steps toward improving health and wellness is often overlooked. Regularly cooking with a variety of common spices recognized for their preventative benefits can improve a healthy diet, leading to increased overall health and longevity.

“Spices are full of healing powers and health benefits, but the best part is they add flavors and depth to our favorite foods,” says Laura Shute, spice expert and co-owner of the Savory Spice Shop in Corona del Mar and the Savory Spice Stop at the OC MIX in Costa Mesa. “Too often we grab for salt or add fat, which can be detrimental to our health. According to prominent doctors and other health experts, the ten most common beneficial spices include:

1. Ginger provides anti-inflammatory properties, which help keep your heart young and arteries clear. It can also boost the immune system and help lower cholesterol levels. In addition, it can treat nausea.
2. Jamaican allspice contains a large amount of antioxidants and can help with digestion. Shute recommends rubbing Jamaican allspice on meat and vegetables or sprinkling it in your soups.
3. Cinnamon can help control blood sugar problems and can lower risk factors in pre-diabetes, as well as possibly help relieve stiffness due to arthritis.
4. Cloves are the spice with the highest antioxidants. It has been shown to be beneficial against muscle pains and arthritis, as a mild anesthetic useful for toothaches, gum pain, and sore throats. Cloves also offer relief from respiratory ailments such as asthma and bronchitis, and can help eliminate intestinal parasites, fungi, and bacteria.
5. Tumeric can be used as prevention against Alzheimer’s and cancer. It is widely used in India, where the elderly have the lowest rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the world, and the most common cancers of the U.S. is 10 times lower.
6. California and European basil, which help improve the body’s antioxidant defenses.
7. Mediterranean thyme, which has properties to promote anti-aging and is known to kill germs, healing infections faster.
8. Sage is known for fighting inflammation, which can help with arthritis symptoms and help slow the aging process, as inflammation at the cellular level is what makes the body age faster.
9. Greek oregano is associated with lowering high cholesterol and lowering the risk of colon cancer.
10. Crushed brown mustard is known to help prevent cancer and heart disease, and lower cholesterol.

  1. Ordered this to simplify prep of a tukery breast at Thanksgiving. Filling a couple of the spice bags with lemon, onions, carrots, a bay leaf or two put inside/under the tukery, put in the roaster or oven presto! you have a super moist tukery breast, with NO MESS. I am not the greatest cook in the world ( far from it, in fact) but preparing a bird or breast this way is goof proof. You can even wash and re-use the spice bags! Really a nice item. Go for it, you will be happy that you did!
