Spider-Man Far From Home Field Trip

We were guests of Sony for the day.

Spider-Man Far From Home, the latest chapter in Spider-Man story will be released on DVD/BluRay on October 1st. The digital version of the movie went on sale on September 17. For the release of the Spider-Man movie, Sony provided us with a field day, exploring behind the scenes action for the movie.

Spider-man Far From Home

We were joined for the day by two of the actors from this amazing movie. Martin Starr (Mr. Harrington) and J.B. Smoove (Mr. Dell); and while it was very fun seeing all behind the scenes items, it was way more fun experiencing it with Martin Starr and J.B. Smoove. The two were full of energy and had great chemistry together. It was visible on the screen and it was absorbing off the screen.

The Third Floor Visualization studios

Creating the world in Spider-Man Far From Home

Our first stop was at The Third Floor Visualization studios. The Third Floor is leader in visualization and CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) in Hollywood. They were behind 8 of the top 9 movies in 2019, including Spider-Man Far From Home. During our visit two of the engineers and story tellers from the studio walked us through the process of visualization.

Visualizing Spider-Man Far From Home

From taking video of the scenes without the actors and layering in the visualization, to the parts of the movie that were completely computer generated. One of the challenges the team faced was that at one point they needed Spider-Man to do some action that was more along his skill set and that it would differentiate him from Ironman and the Hulk. The scene in London where Spider-Man enters the cloud and destroys the drones, was created as part of an effort to emphasize the Spider-Man’s skills.

Visiting Ironhead Studios

The next stop was Ironhead Studio, which was responsible for the costumes and props for the movie. Walking into the studio was mesmerizing. There were props, masks, and helmets from a number of movies I had seen in the past 20 years. While Jose Fernandez has been working in the industry for 30 years, he opened Ironhead studios in 2007. But enough about the history of the studio.

When you enter the main area, Spider-Man is hanging from the ceiling. FYI – this is the costume used for the Amazing Spider-Man that Andrew Garfield was in. Then we had a table of props from the Spider-Man Far From Home. Mr. Fernandez provided background information on all of the masks and props.

Our fun behind the scenes tour took a turn when J.B. Smoove requested to try one of the helmets along with his costar Martin Starr. A few minutes later, our favorite duo were channeling Loki and Magneto.

Magic Castle

The final stop was at The Magic Castle where we were first entertained by Jason Latimer. Jason is a world champion magician and co-host of Science Channel series SciJinks. Jason uses science to create his magic and hopes to inspire kids to get involved in science.

Houman and JB Smoove

Costume maker for Spider-man

After all the fun and games, we were able to sit down and chat with Martin Starr and J.B. Smoove. The duo shared some behind the scenes stories; including their fun times in London for the filming of the movie. Additionally, they were allowed to bring some of their big personalities on the screen.

Spider-Man treats

Overall the day brought us lots of insight about the hard work that went into bringing Spider-Man Far From Home to the screen. There were many people involved in making this movie, and their love for Spider-Man has come through. We found out for example that J.B. Smoove and Martin Starr both showed up to the set of Spider-Man with a beard. And since Martin Starr had been around longer in the Spider-Man universe, J.B. Smoove had to shave his beard.
