It’s Spring At Five Crowns

We were recently invited to explore and taste a sampling of the new Spring Menu at Five Crowns in Corona Del Mar.  Introduced by Chef Alejandra, she’s been cooking up some creativity in the kitchen and we can’t wait to tell you all about it.

Chef Alejandra Padilla is the newly appointed Executive Chef at Five Crowns; she is humble, kind and brings to the table a stellar resume of experience.  She also happens to be the winner of the season premiere episode of “Chopped”.   Of course, you would never know any of this unless someone else tells you or you read about it; because she is here to follow her passion, to create dishes that give you comfort and yet surprise you.

We don’t usually begin with dessert but we must in the case, since we had the most mouth watering, delicious experience with carrots.  Yes, carrots!   Carrot Cake Crumbles, Carrot Puree and Carrot Chips all creatively placed on or around the most perfect Cheesecake and served with a beautiful Walnut Ice Cream.  It is surprisingly not overly sweet and really has just the right combination of everything.  We suggest that you save room for this dessert or maybe mix things up and have it first; we’re in love with it so we had to share it with you first.

As a huge lover of seafood we enjoyed the Salmon with Leeks, Zucchini, Dill, Lemon Conserva, Artichokes and a scattering of Garlic Chips. A brightly colored presentation and a melt in your mouth salmon with subtle flavors of beautiful vegetables; those artichokes were a lovely touch.

You must order the Coffee Rubbed Short Rib!  Perfectly cooked with great flavor and simply gorgeous with a Horseradish Gremolata, Broccolini, Tomato Petals, Grilled Leeks.  The gremolata was perfect and made the dish pop; a mixture of herbs, lemon, horseradish, garlic and parsley.  We might need to start making gremolata for our home grill nights, it’s that good!

We love a good pasta dish, it brings that warm feeling of comfort.  Chef Alejandra surprised us with her version by adding a little extra touch of heat.  A pasta tossed with a sauce of Tomato, Scallions and Pepperoncini served with Clams and Mustard Greens.

There are so many more dishes to explore on the menu, we hope you find your favorites.  Since we opened with dessert, we thought we’d wrap up with another; this delicious Almond Meringue.  If you prefer a subtle sweetness you should find this a pure delight; a perfect stack of Almond Cake, layered with poached Rhubarb, Strawberries and wait for it, Elderflower Whipped Cream.  Beautiful pops of flavor!

You’ll find many other dishes along with some new craft cocktails and of course, your familiar favorites.  Spring is a time of newness; a little warmer weather, blooming flowers and Five Crowns delights us with a menu to celebrate a new season.  Happy Spring!
