Starting Summer Designer Camp at SOCO

I attended camp as a guest of the venue

A few weeks ago my mom told me that I would be participating Designer Camp that was going to be held for the first time in Orange County at the SOCO Collection. I was super excited not because it was my first summer camp this summer, but because it was DESIGNER summer camp.

When I first arrived at SOCO at 8:45 am, some friendly team members greeted me, and they directed me to Drifter to where the camp was meeting. Once I was inside, I checked myself in, and all of the team members introduced themselves and gave me and name tag. Once I got to the studio, I sat down in a chair and then was given a bag that I was to decorate and a clipboard with my schedule. I immediately started coloring my bag while I was waiting for camp to start.

Once everybody was in their seat with their name-tag and personalized bags we began some introducing ourselves to other students in the class. We told them our name, how old we are, where we are from, and one fun fact. Once everybody felt like friends the camp began. The counselors showed us a slideshow talking about all of the different types and styles of design. We all couldn’t take our eyes off the screen as they showed us more and more pictures of the different types of design.

After the slideshow, we began some simple design drawings. We started with a shoe, and then a chair, and then a vase. After we were all done creating our custom objects we began to talk about the projects that we will be completing throughout the week.

Our project is that we are supposed to make an eco-friendly company that gives back to the environment in as many ways as possible. Our company is going to be based on a particular type of design. Once we were done discussing and getting into groups, we went outside to have some Panera Bread for lunch.

After lunch, we took a short walk over to Farrow and Ball. Farrow and Ball is a paint a paper company that has all of their paints made in England. Once we arrived there, the Farrow and Ball staff started walking us through our workshop. We made “Dream Boards” for our business. We picked out a few wallpapers and got some paint card and cut out cool shapes. Once we were done with the cutting, we glued them on poster-board. The colors were meant to go along with what your business was going to be.

After we had got a complimentary paint brush and sample paint can, we headed back to the studio. At the workshop, we talked about everything we did today and everything we will do tomorrow. The first day at Designer Camp was so fun, and I am ready to be designing for the rest of the week at SOCO!
