Strange Magic Takes us Inside the Mind of George Lucas

We attended the interview as a guest of Disney

The film, Strange Magic, takes us inside the mind of the talented director and producer George Lucas. Earlier this month, we went to Skywalker Ranch where we talked with George Lucas about the film, fatherhood, and life. Lucas is newly married and the proud father of a 33-year-old, 26-year-old, 21-year-old and an 18-month-old baby.

“I won’t call it a myth because I beat that one to death with Star Wars, but this is a fairytale. Same thing only sweeter.” George Lucas

Strange Magic is very different from Star Wars, and Lucas started working on the film about 15 years ago. “I love doing musicals; it harkens back to my pre-Star Wars days. I thought it would be fun to make a film that was for tween girls than Star Wars which is for tween boys, even though in the end everybody loved it,” said Lucas.

“The message is so simple. It’s been around for thousands of years, and it can always be retold.” George Lucas

They started working on the film with a small group, “It went on for years and years. I was kind of doing it on the side. It’s something that I did just for the fun of it,” said Lucas. The basis of the film is love..and that everybody deserves to be loved. Lucas was a bachelor for 20 years and thought that he would never fall in love again. “Now I got a princess and I got a little princess. We fell in love because we were exactly alike inside,” said Lucas. The film speaks a lot about Lucas’ experience with love and how infatuation can be confused with true love. “It’s a story that needs to be told to every generation. Little girls growing up, or boys, they don’t know any of this stuff, and by the time they reach 12 they’re very confused. It’s been told over and over again, and it needs to be told over and over again,” said Lucas

“To me adolescence is a key period in a child’s life. To make movies that say look at these issues, they may seem obvious to us because we’ve been through it, maybe your parents have told you about this, maybe they haven’t but you need to know the story of why you have friendships and what friendship means. Why there are things in the world that are bigger than you are. Why your complicated feelings with your parents and all these kinds of things are not unusual, they’re not just you; this is something everybody goes through.” George Lucas

Not only do I love the message that is told in the film but also the music…the amazing music. We all know Lucas well for the music in the film “American Graffiti,” and he’ll now become well-known for the music in “Strange Magic.” Lucas was one of the first directors to use popular music as a soundtrack for a film, and music was one of the inspirations for the film “Strange Magic.” “I love music. Music is a huge part of my life. I wanted to tell a love story using love songs, I could string them all together so they actually told the story,” said Lucas. They started out with over a 100 songs for the film, and they ended up with 25. “It was so painful. They were all wonderful. They were all spectacular, but there’s the part where you have to actually tell the story. I think it molded correctly between the actual story, the dialogue, the characters and the music. It feels like it belongs together,” said Lucas.

“This is my pre-Star Wars period, I’ve gone back, I’m going back in time.” George Lucas

Your family will go back to a time when Lucas did experimental films in College when watching “Strange Magic.” It is a timeless story that your family will fall in love with in theaters January 23rd. Learn more about the film on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
