Super Soccer Stars: Educational and Fun Exercise for All Ages
We attended a class as a guest of Super Soccer Stars
Super Soccer Stars’ goal is to teach soccer skills in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Their specially designed curriculum along with low coach-to-child ratios builds individual player self-confidence and team work, and most importantly, keeps the game fun!
My two year old daughter had the chance to preview her first ever soccer class with Super Soccer Stars at their Irvine location. While she didn’t have any prior experience with soccer and no expectations – other than to “use her feet not hands!” (as I’d been coaching her all morning) – I played soccer as a youth and in adult leagues, as well as coached my older daughter, so I went in with some expectations. I’m pleased to say that they were definitely met with the Super Soccer Stars program.
The two year old class ran 40 minutes long and, amazingly, kept the kids’ attention span the entire class. (If you have a two year old, or have ever spent more than an hour with one, you know what a feet this can be.) The two coaches leading the class were knowledgable about soccer, and engaging to the children.
The class started out with a song about the fundamentals of soccer (think, again, using feet not hands) and a stretching session. From there the coaches switched off leading several different games that taught basic soccer skills (dribbling, kicking, rolling back the ball, toe-taps). The skills covered were age appropriate, while staying true to actually teaching soccer not just running around (more challenging in a two year old class than a seven year old class). The kids received the games well and were having fun while learning – score!
There were a few silly games thrown in to keep things interesting for the kids and change things up. This particular one prompted the kids to run around and gather all the cones scattered about to “decorate” the coaches. While this doesn’t have direct application as a soccer skill, the kids loved it and got great exercise scampering about. It also helped to make newcomers, like my daughter, comfortable with her coaches.
The last part of class was the “game” time, which gave each child experience dribbling (little kicks) the ball up and scoring (big kick). The kids loved this part, especially the cheers they received from coaches and spectating parents.
The two year old class kept parents close by in case there was assistance needed; however, the five kids in the class participated almost completely autonomously in the activities presented.
Super Soccer Stars has classes throughout Orange County for ages 12 months and up. You can find a class that’s right for your child at supersoccerstars.com. My bet is that your child will enjoy it just as much as mine did!
