Surfing Lessons with Pro Surfer Nakoa Decoite

We attended as a guest

After our LA Royal Salute night out, our British Polo Day events continued for this mother daughter duo. We were now on our way to iconic Venice Beach for a surf lesson with Pro Surfer Nakoa Decoite, let’s go beach babes!

We met Nakoa at a rental shop on the boardwalk and he walked us through perfect board types and wetsuits for our levels and body types. Being a fan of his already, I knew he had surfed the infamous Jaws on Hawaii’s Northshore and was a highly respected professional polo player, but hearing him tell us about himself, Nakoa was very down to earth and personable. He was engaging and eager to learn about us as well, even for being 9am in the morning after our late night out!

As we made our way across the warm sand to the shore break, my mom and I joked that she hadn’t surfed since Oahu Summer Break circa ’84. She’s only a staggering 5’1 petite lil lady
so we were all a bit nervous for her. On top of the stereotypical Venice locals owning the waves, Nakoa made us feel comfortable and put all of our minds at ease. He reviewed the best practices based on our individual levels for:

– proper stance “goofy footed vs. regular footed”

– positioning of your feet “never straight on, but angled”

-centering your stance on the board towards the tail with your back foot on the pad

– popping up to your knees first, then feet

– paddling out

-and of course SMILE!

Really as long as you’re pumped at what you’re doing, you’re golden!

Amped and ready to go, we paddled out into the white water. I frequently longboard at Doheny Beach and am used to the mellow rolling 3′-4′
waves, but on this day the waves were coming fast and at 5′-6’…watch out Nakoa you’ve got your hands full with us! He was so patient and helped my mom stay on her board; helping to push her into an incoming set. With myself already having the basic 101, he guided me on how to better watch for incoming sets and when to let big barrels go and when to charge them.

About an hour in, my lil mom was tapped out and I egged Nakoa on to paddle out to the 6′-7′ waves with the Venice big boys and show them whose boss. After all, I did have a pro
by my side and I wanted to see his skills in action, Nakoa did not disappoint! I was in awe by his effortless talent and the crowd forming on the beach definitely noticed as well!

Hungry & thirsty o’clock hit us and we made our way to an amazing Seafood Restaurant in downtown Venice called, Salt. It’s quaint, beachy, and young atmosphere was just what we needed without it being annoyingly hipster. There we shared oysters on the half shell, fresh ahi with
jalapeño slaw and one of the most amazing homemade veggie burgers I’ve ever had
and I’m not even vegetarian! Yummy! Nakoa has an amazing partnership with the brand, Royal Salute whiskey and for British Polo Day. He contributes not only his surfing talents, but his polo talent as well. He comes from a long line of polo players from the Hawaiian islands and is proud to have his heritage still strong within him and his every day life.

Will this Mother Daughter duo surf again? Absolutely! Will we continue to sip fine
Royal Salute Whiskey? A hundred percent. Will we ever forget our unique
experience with Nakoa Decoite? Not in a million years, we’ll treasure that day
