Take a ‘Holiday’

Who doesn’t love live music?  Who doesn’t love a craft cocktail after a long work week?  And who doesn’t every once in a while just like to go out with the girls or have a date night with the hubby and cut loose?  Ummm, I know I sure do!

Now I like to dance, but I don’t know most adults over 30 who enjoy a loud nightclub or pumping DJ mixes.  Of course to each their own, but when it comes to live music, I really just appreciate a great sounding local band that I can sing along with and get some of my moves out.  I preface “my moves” with needing a bit of liquid courage, but then again when you’ve got your girls by your side or your man on your arm, it’s really just about having a good time!

I discovered a fantastic hidden gem called Holiday.  Located near Triangle Square in Costa Mesa right off the 55, they’re open each Thursday thru Sunday night.  Holiday offers that craving each of us gets to let our hair down.  They have country nights, Indie nights, 70’s nights, 80’s nights, 90’s nights and even your favorite top 40 hits, all sung live for your dancing entertainment.

And being the adults we are, you don’t have to settle for well drinks and cheap wine, but rather Holiday offers an array of craft cocktails, each specifically concocted by Holiday’s very own mixologist.  Each season brings a new fresh menu to sip on, but now thru January, they’re offering a Fall Libations Menu that will tingle your taste buds and leave you wanting more.

Each cocktail is infused with a certain fall element, but my personal favorite was the “The Southern Graham.”  It was made with Bourbon, basil, lemon, ginger ale and swirled with a cinnamon stick.  It literally felt like I was drinking Christmas.

Three very important elements I look for when trying craft cocktails and Holiday exceeded all of my expectations:

Do I recognize the ingredients listed?
I think it’s important to know what you’re drinking while still having the element of surprise when Elderflower is added, and it just blows your mind.

Can I taste the alcohol?
Ok so yes, we want to enjoy the liquor we’ve requested, but I also am purposefully ordering a craft cocktail because of the flavors of the unique ingredients combined.  If I wanted a whiskey neat, then I would order one…and not to mention that most of the time when we can’t taste the alcohol right away, it’s because our cocktail is made CORRECTLY…and then, of course, we can order another because they taste so damn good!

Is my bartender showboating?
A good mixologist will, of course, create the most spectacular libation, but they most also put a little “umph” in their presentation to keep you interested and excited, BUT under no circumstances should my mixologist overdo it by spinning a bottle around his back like Tom Cruise or throwing fire into the air.  Just pour my elevated drink so I can get back to my date night or back onto the dance floor.

Holiday’s interior is something dark and mysterious like out of a Wes Anderson movie. Infamous Holiday actors wallpaper the walls, a long black & white bar, dim lighting and intimate seating to sneak away for a private conversation.  The sunken dance floor and well-lit stage makes for a front & center view of the band, so there’s really not a bad spot in the house.

My favorite part of the design is that the back wall actually retracts open to reveal a hidden room with another full bar.  So if you want to book a special private event, you and your guests can have their own private party while the main party is going on or you could even just rent out the back portion for the extra seating and have the false wall completely open to enjoy the live band.

This was such a big selling point for me that I actually booked a private corporate event the very next day!  It may have been the Bill Murray painting on the wall or deep ruby red leather booths, but knowing there was a hidden magical space that could be rented out for reasonable prices, really sold me.

Now I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t mention the incredible team at Holiday.  They were literally the nicest, most sweet human beings I’ve ever met…and I swear they didn’t even know I was writing this blog!  Aaron Reid is one of Holiday’s partners and could probably turn on the house lights with his smile alone.  He is incredibly knowledgeable in the beverage and hospitality world, and he has developed his team also to fall nothing short of that.  My bartender for one evening was Kayla Espinoza who embodied that perfect list I mentioned earlier of how you want to experience your craft cocktail.  She was personable, but not overly talkative and made the most delicious drinks I’ve ever had.

I can tell you that their event bookings this season are going fast, so I would absolutely jump on this opportunity if you’re still hunting for that perfect location…otherwise, you’ll be stuck at Dave & Busters.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

For more information, please check out or email Aaron Reid directly at [email protected]  He can fill you in on all the details and help you plan the best office Christmas party yet.

But to really get the full experience that Holiday has to offer, grab a sitter this weekend and go out.  Get dolled up, order something besides a boring vodka soda and show the world your robot, your hustle, your 2 step, whatever movement makes you feel like you’re on Holiday!
