Tanaka Farms Strawberry Tour

Tanaka Farms

Tanaka Farms is a 30-acre working family farm located in the heart of Irvine.  One of the unique things about Tanaka Farms is their educational tours offered throughout the seasons in which kids and adults are able to experience the workings of a real farm, and, best of all, taste a variety of their delicious, organic produce.

Tanaka Farms offers four different tours throughout the year:

  • Strawberry Tours (March-June)
  • Watermelon Tours (July-August)
  • Harvest Tours (March – August)
  • U-Pick Pumpkin Patch (October)

In December, the farm offers a Christmas tree lot.

Reservations are generally required for tours, and can be made by calling call (949) 653-2100 ext.204. When you arrive for your tour wear comfortable clothes, close-toed shoes, and bring a hat and plenty of sunscreen in the warm months.

From the moment you arrive, and park – on their dirt lot – you will feel like you’ve escaped the hustle and bustle of Orange County and been whisked away to a different place or time. It definitely doesn’t feel like you’re right off the I5 and Jeffery.

Once you make your way over to where the tours pick up – which also happens to be where their produce stand is located – you can check in, and wait for your tractor-drawn wagon under your assigned tent.

Pull up a hay bale or take a look at some of the items they have planted in troughs around the area.

Once your wagon arrives, you’ll be pulled, via tractor, away through the rolling hills of the working farm.

While on the tour, an experienced guide will relay interesting facts about  Tanka Farms, it’s history, and farming in general. One of the reasons Tanaka started tours was to educate the public about where food comes from and how it grows.

While touring, guests are able to sample 3-5 different seasonal fruits or vegetables, straight from the ground (although they are washed first).  Tours are a great way to get your kids to try veggies they might not normally be adventurous enough to eat. There must be something about eating on an open wagon, straight from the dirt, because they all love it! That little one here doesn’t appear thrilled, but we promise you, she chopped half a bunch of cilantro – plain!

Our strawberry tour included tastings of cilantro, green beans, green onions, carrots, and corn.

An if the veggies don’t easily impress the kiddos for some reason, the wagon ride is sure to.  It was hands up in our wagon… better than a Disney ride, although don’t tell Walt.

After sampling the different fruits and veggies, and learning some interesting facts about farming, guests are let out of the wagons to go pick their own produce – in this case strawberries, naturally, because it was the strawberry tour.

There is something fascinating about picking food straight from the plant that we just don’t get to experience often this day in age. My girls – ages 2 and 5 – loved it.

They may have eaten more than they picked, but somehow our baskets (every paying guest gets one to fill and take home) were laden with berries by the end (thanks to a hard working farm Mama).

At this point the wagons load up again and take guests back to their pickup location. Here, as mentioned, is Tanaka’s farm stand, so if you didn’t pick quite enough on the tour you can load up at this point. The farm stand is open to tour guests and the general public 9am-5pm seven days a week.

We always seem to need more produce, but this is likely because theirs is amazing.  The corn, which is just now coming into season, is to die for.  We may or may not have left with three ears for each member of our family. Okay, yeah, we did; and you should, too.
