The Ecology Center Handmade Maker’s Market

Last year, The Ecology Center debut Handmade: Maker’s Market, a show celebrating modern makers and local artisans. Following a positive reception, the market returns again this year to San Juan Capistrano with more artisans, a DIY craft station for kids, a cocktail garden lounge for adults, artists’ demos, and musical guests. Maker’s Market will be held at The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano on November 14th 11am-4pm, just in time for the holidays.

While craft fairs abound throughout Southern California, Maker’s Market is unique because it strictly curates artisans with an emphasis on locally sourced and eco-conscious products. The market’s goods include hand-dyed garments, hand-carved sustainable wood, plant-based soaps, herbal remedies, organic and local food, among other eco-friendly goods that fit with non-profit’s mission to cultivate a sustainable culture and lifestyle.

In addition to supporting local artisans, The Ecology Center curates the market with careful consideration for the entire production process and life cycle of the product from raw materials to decomposition. For example, King’s Road Apothecary, one of the market’s makers, uses responsibly wildcrafted plants from the Los Angeles mountains to make herbal remedies. Elliott Marks, a furniture designer, chooses domestic, sustainable woods such as douglas fir, white oak, and walnut, as opposed to importing wood cut from forests in South America. And even closer to home, Kristin Amber Morrison, a textiles artist, grows her own dye plants to color her garments.

Most of the market’s vendors avoid sourcing overseas and practice small-batch production. Thus, when a customer shops at Maker’s Market, they are guaranteed quality, US-made products that support the environment.

Maker’s Market drew over 600 shoppers last year and hopes to see this number double with the addition of more local artisans – including a kite maker, chocolatiers, a surfboard maker, and candle makers. Maker’s Market will also be a family-friendly event this year with a Wildcraft Lab and yoga shala for kids.
