The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens

We visited as a guest of the venue

One of the most popular places to visit in Pasadena is the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. On the first day of our Pasadena staycation, we had lunch at Pie-n-Burger before going to explore the botanical gardens.

I picked one of the hottest weeks in history to visit the botanical gardens, and the temperature was over 100 degrees, so we had to make our visit shorter than I would have liked. When we first arrived at the gardens, I purchased the kids some water bottles at the cafe located near the entrance to keep them hydrated as we walked around.

The minute that we entered the gardens, we were captivated by the beauty. The gardens are 120 acres, and we could have spent the entire day exploring the different gardens and museums. Our first stop was to look at the orbit pavilion. We entered a beautiful steel sculpture where my kids were able to hear sounds from all the different satellites – it was super cool!

Next, we took a cooler walk through the jungle gardens. The lush gardens sheltered us from the hot sun, and we took our time to admire the beautiful plants and waterfalls.

I was able to cool the kids down by taking them inside of the Huntington House. The kids felt like they were in a scene from the film Frozen as they walked up the giant staircase to look at the beautiful artwork on display throughout the house. There was a complimentary audio tour that we used to be able to learn about all the different art in the historic home.

Once the kids had cooled down, we went back outside to see more of the gardens. We walked around the rose garden, the Chinese garden, and Japanese garden. The gardens were gorgeous, and we wished that it was cooler temperatures so that we could have explored more.

When the kids started to feel overheated, we returned to our Kia Sorento in the parking lot where the kids were able to quickly cool down with the cooled seats and air conditioning before exploring more of Pasadena.

The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens is one of the most beautiful places in Pasadena and families will need at least 1-2 days to see everything that the beautiful place has to offer. If you are visiting in the summer, I recommend coming early in the morning before it gets too hot so that your children can fully appreciate the beauty of the different gardens. I also recommend bringing a camera to capture your beautiful children surrounded by blooming flowers.

The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens is located at 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, CA 91108. They are open from 10 am to 5 pm (closed on Tuesday). Don’t miss sharing this beautiful gem with your children when visiting Pasadena.
