Three Tips For Inspiring a Young Athletes to Never Give Up

This is a sponsored post for SheSpeaks/POWERADE

Love for the game of football

Sports can be challenging for the athlete and the parents. Young athletes can be pushed to their limits in competitive sports, and sadly some end up giving up on their dreams. My son, Tyler had always dreamed of playing football, and while we were waiting for him to bulk up so he could give the game a try, it never happened.

But, we didn’t let him give up on his dream of playing football, and helped to support him on his journey and fueled his love for the game. Once he started playing football, he was the smallest one on the team, and had to give 110% to keep up with the other athletes, but that didn’t stop him. He persevered, worked hard, and ended up being the strongest player on the team at the end of the season. During his first season of football, there were many times that he wanted to quit, and these are some tips that I learned to help keep him inspired, encouraged and focused.

The most important thing that we did was parents was to inspire him. I would leave motivational quotes in his lunchbox, watched inspiring sports films, and celebrated all of his strengths.

The key to having athletes be successful in sports is to support them. My husband never missed a game, and we encouraged extended family members to support him at his games. The night before a game, I would send a text message to all of our family members inviting them to cheer him on the next morning on the sidelines.

One of the most challenging things to inspire young athletes when they are frustrated is to motivate them. My husband would take him to the football field after work to toss the ball together and talk out any frustrations that he was experiencing, and to problem solve how to get past them, and keep going strong. We were also fortunate to have a coach that was tough on the boys, but was one of the best motivators we have met in all of our years of participating in sports.

With football season being during the hottest season of the year, and the athletes needing to wear so much equipment, one of the biggest challenges for me as a parent was keeping them hydrated. There were many days that they were playing in 100-degree temperatures with no shade, and there was one game when Tyler got dehydrated, disoriented, and 911 was called. It was at that game that I learned that while we were doing everything we could to inspire, support, and motive him, the most important thing to help him be successful was to keep him hydrated.

It was after that game that we started hydrating him 24 hours before a game with POWERADE. We would encourage him to drink as much POWERADE as possible before, during, and after a game. It was the ION4® Advanced Electrolyte System in POWERADE that helped to replenish four electrolytes he was losing in sweat: sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. It was because of the Advanced Electrolyte System and 6% carbohydrate solution in POWERADE that helped him never to get dehydrated again during a game last season.
