Tips for a Fun Family Game Night

For many families, the holiday break can be both fun and stressful. The solution? Family Game Night! Family games can be a great way to reconnect with each other while helping alleviate the cursed “cabin fever” associated with winter break.

Here are a few tips to holding a successful family game night:

  1. Inventory games
Do a quick check of your games. Replace missing pieces, or even add a few new games into your game collection. Watch the weekly sale ads at stores like Target and Toys R’ Us for lower prices. Retailers will occasionally hold buy “one get one” free or half-off deals.
  2. Avoid fights
To help avoid fighting amongst family members, designate player jobs such as set up, player referee and clean up. This involvement tactic will encourage a sense of ownership of the event. In addition, lay the ground rules before the game starts. An example of an important game rule is to determine in advance if cell phone or other technology can be used during game time.
  3. Bring food
Let family members help select some of the finger food and snacks for the night. By allowing kids and adults the opportunity to select some of the snacks, you (again) raise the level of involvement and commitment by making them feel like an important part of the evening.
  4. Set a designated time and place
Make the announcement of when and where game night will take place. You can even ask a family member to make a sign and post it in a common area of the house. This bit of marketing will hopefully increase excitement and anticipation of the big night. It also reinforces the importance of this family commitment – in writing!
  5. Don’t be too competitive
Remember, family game night is not all about winning. It is about spending quality time together. It is about laughing in spite of your self. In this case, even when you’re losing – you’re really winning.

Happy Gaming!
