Tips for Kratom Beginners: How and Why to Find Quality Kratom

Among those seeking natural, organic methods to boost energy or calm the senses, kratom is a popular choice. Found in southeast Asia, kratom comes from the leaves of tropical evergreen trees in the coffee family.  For centuries, farmers in Indonesia chewed the leaves to help them stay alert and gain stamina to work long hours in the fields.

Today, these leaves are typically dried and made into a powder with an aroma which may increase energy or soothe the senses as needed. The effects of kratom vary by variety and strain but can last anywhere from five to eight hours. Each type has unique properties, determined by its strain and vein type.

Types of Kratom

Kratom comes in different strains which are determined by where they grow, and different veins determined by when the leaf is harvested. Before choosing a kratom strain and vein, it’s essential to do your research, so you understand the properties of each.

Kratom Veins

There are three common kratom vein colors: red, green, and white. Each of these refers to the color of the leaf veins at the time they are harvested. The vein colors change as they age, with red as the youngest, green at peak maturity, and white from when the leaves are slightly past maturation.

  • Red-vein: Red-vein kratom is one of the most popular varieties, made from leaves at early maturity. This type of kratom is an excellent choice for beginners as its aroma promotes relaxation and has soothing properties. It is relatively mild compared to other varieties and may be ideal for clearing a busy mind.

  • Green-vein: This “middle ground” variety has some of the energy-boosting qualities of the white-vein and the relaxing aroma of the red-vein. Green-vein kratom is suitable for beginners as it’s not as intense as the red-vein especially when experienced in smaller amounts.

  • White-vein: Perfect for energizing and uplifting, white-vein kratom is also known to help concentration and improve stamina. Since it helps promote energy, white-vein kratom may be a bit overwhelming for a first-time user and is recommended for more experienced users who understand how kratom affects them.

Regional Varieties

Beyond the different vein colors, where kratom is grown can also affect its properties. Different regions have different soil types, growing methods, and climates which affect how kratom is produced. Regional strains are typically named after where they are grown so it’s easy to determine, but some of the popular regional varieties include:

  • Borneo Kratom from Borneo
  • Thai Kratom from Thailand
  • Indo Kratom from Indonesia
  • Sumatra Kratom from the rainforests of Sumatra in Indonesia
  • Maeng Da Kratom, a potent variety of Thai Kratom

Each of these regional varieties has their own red-, white-, and green-vein strains.

Type of Kratom Products

Kratom is typically sold as a powder, but there are a few other ways you may see it marketed. The most common types of kratom products you’ll find include:

  • Powder: This is the most common form of kratom which is made from grinding the dried leaf into a powder.
  • Capsules: Powdered kratom can be put in an enclosed shell to be sold as capsules for easy, on-the-go use.
  • Extract: This is a concentrated form of kratom made from distilling leaves.
  • Tincture: Kratom extract mixed with alcohol or some other carrier liquid.

What to Look for in Your Kratom Products

As with any natural product, not all providers are created equal. While more individuals are discovering kratom and its wellness potential, non-certified providers are trying to sell impure or imposter kratom products. There are a few things to check for before buying kratom online to avoid purchasing a faulty product.

Certificate of Analysis

Impure or imposter kratom has not undergone testing, which will determine its purity and safety. While testing is not required, the providers that conduct testing do so to ensure they have a high-quality product. If you don’t see testing information readily available, always ask to see proof of analysis. High-quality providers of kratom for sale, like Kratora, will happily share their rigorous testing results.

Look for testing from an FDA-compliant third-party lab showing the provider’s kratom is free from contaminants like heavy metals (i.e., lead and mercury), E.Coli, and salmonella. Testing should also show the kratom contains its essential alkaloids, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.

Regional Integrity

True quality kratom is found only in Southeast Asia, in areas such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Ensure the kratom you’re purchasing is grown in one of these forest-rich areas. If you cannot verify where the product is produced, you’re likely working with a disreputable provider. Verified providers will know where their product is harvested and the farmers they work with in that region.

Relationship with Farmers

How and when kratom is harvested dramatically impacts its quality. The best providers have long-standing relationships with kratom farmers who have worked in their fields for years and even generations. They should be able to provide information about their treatment of the land and farmers, showing sustainable, ethical practices. The best kratom vendors value their farmers and understand the history and skill involved in kratom growing and harvesting is paramount to quality.

Purchasing Your First Kratom Product

Once you’ve verified you’re working with a reputable vendor, it’s time to make your first kratom purchase. Consider beginning with a curated beginner variety pack or a similar mix to find out which strains work for you. The product you receive should be sealed in an air-tight package, and you should store it similarly.
