Tips for Picking the Best Barbecue

The time for cueing up the grill is upon us. Like many families, a majority of our summer meals center around outdoor cooking and entertaining. Unfortunately, our propane barbecue completed its “final cook off” last summer after a long seven-year relationship, so we spent some time looking on Now that we’ve moved on, what are some of the main features to look for when buying a barbecue?

According to my grilling husband extraordinaire, here are four main things to look for when purchasing a new barbecue:

1)   Heat, baby!
Check the heat level of the grills, or in technical terms, its British Thermal Unit (BTU). As a general rule of thumb, for every square inch of grill you want 100 BTUs. Keep in mind, the type of heat source, size of barbecue and crafted materials can all impact the heat level.

2) Match the Grill to the Party
Match the barbecue to the size party and type of cooking style. Consider a multi-level barbecue to accommodate a variety of food and number of burners (three or more burners for bigger shin digs).

4) Mobility
If the wind picks up the last thing you want to do is smoke your party out, so make sure you’ve got wheels up to move the grill accordingly.

Most barbecues will put you back between $100 to $500 depending on the type and brand. There are four main types of barbecues: Natural Gas, Propane, Charcoal and Wood Smoker. All offer a variety of methods to cook your favorite barbecue fare.

A few general tips when you bring the new barbecue home:

  • Make sure you season the grill a few times before putting your best meat and veggies on the rack (applies to iron grill).
  • After each use, clean with a dry towel rub application of vegetable oil or olive oil to the iron grill, which helps prevent rusting (make sure it’s completely cooled).
  • Buy quality tools when cueing it up; safely turning food under high heat requires proper tools.
  • Be sure to properly cover your barbecue when not in use (completely cooled) to extend the life of the new grill.

My barbecue guru husband seems ready to shop for a new propane grill. I have a feeling, though, he knows exactly what he’s looking for, which is no problem for me. After all, someone has to take on the laborious job of  taste tester.
