Tips for Traveling with CBD

Even though CBD products are legal in most parts of the United States, you could still run into trouble when traveling. For that reason, it’s critical to plan in advance, as you don’t want to find yourself in a showdown with the law.

It doesn’t matter how you’re traveling—via air or automobile—you should take special caution if you’re bringing CBD products along for the ride. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your safety and well-being.

Of course, there’s a big difference between flying with CBD and driving with CBD.

When flying, you’ll have to get the product past Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers—and that’s not always as easy as it sounds.

Here are five tips you can follow to make life a bit easier on you:

  1. Always Carry the Product’s Certificate of Analysis

Also known as a CoA, the certificate of analysis is a lab test that shows the chemical composition of your product. TSA agents will look closely at the THC concentration to ensure that the product doesn’t violate any laws.

Even if you never have to produce it, you should keep the CoA nearby. It’s sure to come in handy if you run into trouble with law enforcement.

  1. Know the Law

For example, in your state, you may be able to find CBD edibles for sale and legally make a purchase.

However, that doesn’t necessarily hold true with other states. To prevent potential complications, make sure you understand the law in the state you’re visiting.

For example, your state may be lenient on CBD laws, but another one could have strict laws and enforcement protocols in place.

  1. Pack Your Products Appropriately

If you’re driving to your destination, this isn’t a huge deal. You can pack your products however you want, as long as you don’t do anything to put them in harm’s way (such as exposure to extreme heat).

Conversely, if you’re flying, there are a variety of rules you need to follow. For instance, if you’re traveling with CBD oil, it must meet TSA requirements in regards to how much liquid you can take on your flight.

Tip: as tempting as it may sound, don’t attempt to conceal your CBD from the authorities. It’s not likely that you’ll get away with it. Instead, the only thing you’re doing is raising suspicions.

  1. Travel With Your Prescription

Do you have a prescription to take a CBD product? For example, maybe your child takes Epidiolex, a drug that is FDA approved.

Rather than risk trouble, take your prescription with you. This doesn’t guarantee that a TSA agent or law enforcement officer will let you go without questioning, but it’ll definitely work in your favor.

Keep your prescription, along with any other relevant documentation, in a safe place with your product’s CoA.

  1. Don’t Argue

It’s easy to get into an argument with a TSA officer or police officer should they question the legality of traveling with CBD.

However, if you go down this path, it’s not going to help you. You’re better off hearing them out, explaining your side of the story, and trying to find some type of compromise.

If you continue to push, despite the fact that the officer isn’t giving you any ground, you’re better off giving up your product. Should you take things too far, perhaps by saying something that you usually wouldn’t, it could result in more trouble than you ever thought possible.

Final Thoughts on Traveling with CBD

If you’re one of those people who enjoys taking CBD, regardless of the reason, you may be interested in traveling with it.

It doesn’t matter if you’re flying to a beach in Florida or visiting a national park in West Virginia, take caution to ensure that you don’t run into any trouble with the law.

When you take the right steps, while also knowing the laws in your state and those that you’re traveling to, you’re in a better position to safely travel with your CBD products.
