Top Reasons You’ve Already Given Up On Your New Year’s Resolutions

Here you are just a few weeks into the year, and your priorities are already out of order. Like most people, you created a list of goals you’d like to accomplish in your personal or professional life. You started on the right track, but it wasn’t long before old habits returned and routines fell by the wayside. While there’s still plenty of time to recover, you can’t help but wonder if it’s pointless.

If you’re feeling this way, you’re not alone. Many people have great intentions to make positive changes in their lives, only to have something stagnate their progress. As there are several reasons, this can happen, getting to the bottom of your core causes can help you achieve greatness. Here’s a look at some of the most common factors.

Your Why Is Superficial

All too often, people set goals without clearly understanding why they want to accomplish them. There’s a big difference between wanting to lose weight to fit in with your friends than doing it to be healthy for your children. Rather than attaching your goals to something superficial, find a reason why that matters to you. When the going gets tough, it is your “why” that’s going to give you the courage to keep going.

You Don’t Have a Game Plan

It’s great that you want to start a new business, but you can’t accomplish this if you don’t have a plan. Without a well-researched strategy of how you’ll become an entrepreneur, you’ll waste a lot of time, money, and energy. Consequently, you become discouraged and give up. Asking yourself questions like, “What steps do you need to take to achieve your goal?” and “What resources will you rely on to help you get there?” will assist you in creating small, actionable steps. These steps keep you on task and make achieving your goals easier.

You’re Not Tapping Into Available Resources

Whether you’re trying to eat better and lose weight or advance in your career, you have access to so many resources. Failing to use these to your advantage makes the journey that much harder. For example, if you’re not committed to working out at home, joining a local gym might help. You have access to state-of-the-art equipment, personal training, and the camaraderie of other members to keep you on the right path.

You Lack Support

Change is challenging. Achieving your resolutions means stepping outside of your comfort zone. As this is not always the easiest thing to do, sometimes you need someone in your corner. There’s nothing like having your best friend giving you words of encouragement or getting advice from a support group to inspire you to be the best version of yourself. On days when things seem impossible, it’s those people that care about you and your future that will give you the strength to carry on.

You’re Too Hard On Yourself

Last but not least, the reason you’re falling short on your resolutions is that you’re too hard on yourself. For some reason, people can be the worst critics of their own wasteful lifestyle. You want so desperately to succeed that anything less causes you to look down on yourself. Those negative thoughts weigh on you daily, causing you to throw in the towel.

If you don’t believe in yourself, you’ll never get where you want to be. You must first understand that this journey will be filled with ups and downs. You’ll have days where you’re on point and others where you fall off the bandwagon. Learn how to be kind to yourself by celebrating the small victories and speaking words of affirmation.

If you’re tired of making the same resolutions every year, perhaps it’s time to take a closer look at the underlying cause. Whether you lack a game plan or failed to use available resources, you can turn things around. By resolving the core culprits in your stagnation, you can develop a strategy to help you set goals and actually achieve them.
