Tru Grits: Modern Asian Fusion Restaurant

We dined as a guest of the venue

I love when I stumble upon a hidden dining gem in Orange County, and that was the case when I brought my family for dinner at Tru Grits in Anaheim. After a fun day at the Disneyland Resort, we were in search of something delicious and new for dinner that was within close proximity of Disneyland. I had heard a lot of buzz surrounding Tru Grits and decided to bring the family for dinner.

The restaurant is located in the most unexpected place – the lobby of a local hotel! Normally, a hotel restaurant is ‘average,’ but that is not the case with this delicious dining destination. The cuisine is modern Asian fusion style that is 110% kid-friendly. Since it was our first time dining at Tru Grits, we decided to sample a variety of dishes off their menu.

The kids favorite on the appetizer menu was the Tru Grits popcorn chicken. What kid doesn’t like popcorn chicken? The tasty fried bites were seasoned with an herb garden basil and secret chef seasoning. Even your pickiest eater will devour every last bite.

For the vegetarian in our family, we ordered the crispy Brussel sprouts. The vegetables boasted with flavor from the balsamic reduction and were topped with parmesan cheese.

The highlight of the appetizer menu is the poke wonton nachos! We devoured every last bite of this flavorful dish. On top of a crispy wonton shells comes fresh ahi tuna, salmon, cucumber, and a seaweed salad. Don’t leave Tru Grits without trying this dish!

Then it was time for the best time of the night – the main course. It was a chilly evening the night that we dined at Tru Grits, and it was the secret beef noodle soup that tantalized my daughters taste buds. The soup was flavorful and featured a braised beef shank, bok choy, and pickled vegetables. The soup clearly highlighted the chef’s talent.

I was in the mood for a little comfort food and decided to have the New Orleans seafood ‘pastalaya.’ The flavorful pasta dish featured a cajun alfredo with shrimp, crawfish, andouille, and peppers. The dish had quite a kick to it and was everything that I hoped it would be.

My husband was in heaven with every bite of their signature chicken and waffles. The dish featured bacon crumbles and a maple glazed buttermilk sauce. The dish is quite large, and there is plenty to share or to bring leftovers home to enjoy the next day.

The chef had recommended the signature tycoon beef short rib for my younger meat lover. He savored every bite of the tender beef that was served with a red wine and herb sauce and paired with garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus and mushroom.

Finally, my vegetarian son enjoyed a pan-seared salmon with fresh seasonal vegetables. He is an extremely health-conscious eater, so we ordered the salmon grilled, plain without the honey teriyaki and fingerling potatoes that normally come with the dish.

When it came to dessert, we couldn’t decide, so the chef recommended we get one of each. We sampled the chocolate tower of terror cake, homemade crème brûlée, and the Tru Grits sizzling bread pudding. Everyone in our family had a different favorite, and they were all decadent desserts.

The next time you’re visiting the Disneyland Resort or looking for somewhere new and exciting to dine at in the Anaheim area, make reservations at Tru Grits.
