U-Pick Strawberries at South Coast Farms

u-pick strawberries at South Coast Farms

Nothing, absolutely nothing, says Spring is here like red ripe strawberries.  Every year when I see those little portable stands start popping up around March I get so excited.  But, there is no strawberry that compares to a ruby red one just plucked from the ground. And it just so happens that our family got to do just that recently at South Coast Farms, in San Juan Capistrano, which grows, many locals would argue, the hands down best strawberries on the planet!

South Coast Farms did their first U-pick event of the season, and let me tell you, it was a hit with my kids, along with all those who I saw running around in the rows and rows of fresh strawberries (most with traces of strawberry juice dripping off their chins).

We arrived around 11am on a Sunday, two hours after opening, and meandered out behind the farm stand and right into the rows of gorgeous, blooming, organic fruits and vegetables. There was an employee who greeted us and handed us some bags in which to carry our loot. (We also could have brought our own reusable bag or basket.) The employee was friendly and answered my four-year old’s questions about different vegetables she saw growing. (Sorry, Honey, Mama isn’t quite the green thumb; you need to ask an expert.) Then we were turned loose to meander anywhere out in what I would estimate is several acres of beautiful strawberries.

We spent around 20 minutes filling two bags with berries. Actually my one year old made strawberry jam more than anything, but she was all smiles, so it was a success.

We then toted our goods back to the farm stand and paid a mere $2.00 per pound for our perfect, organic strawberries.  This seems to be a fair discount from their going farm stand price, which itself is worth every penny.

Before checking out we also picked up some various produce from the stand.  This organic head of red leaf lettuce has to be the most gigantically amazing thing I’ve ever laid eyes on, and get this, it was $2!!! Three huge salads later (and our family puts down salad) we still haven’t used it all up!

South Coast Farms is a certified organic grower of wholesome organic fruits and vegetables. It is located at 32701 Alipaz St., San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675.

South Coast Farms has scheduled another U-pick strawberry day for this SATURDAY and SUNDAY, MARCH 14 and 15. 9am – 3pm. A bumper crop of huge, red ripe, delicious certified organic strawberries!  More details are available on their Facebook page.

If you want to experience more than South Coast Farms’ strawberries, a range of beautiful organic fruits and vegetables are available at their farm stand.  It is open Monday through Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sundays 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. They also offer a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.

However you choose to enjoy South Coast Farms, I promise you will enjoy your experience… you may even want to lounge around in the strawberry fields like my little one.
