The Use of Technology in The Education System

Technology is the driving force behind most major industries in today’s ever-changing economy. Technology can be defined as applying a scientific approach for a particular purpose that is often characterized by the use of specialized equipment. Justifiably, the education system has also taken advantage of the various technologies available to improve the current learning environment and thus provide students with adequate skills and knowledge to identify various opportunities in the 21st century.

Technology

The implementation of technology into the learning environment is aimed at improving how students and teachers interact. In the long run, the incorporation of technology in learning has significantly contributed to developing a more conducive learning environment that is accommodating to both teachers’ and students’ needs, especially as the world struggled to curb the spread of COVID-19. The global pandemic has forced most learning institutions to close their doors for several months now.

However, during the pandemic, there has been a significant upsurge in the reliance on new and emerging technologies to facilitate remote learning. The use of technology in the classroom has been steadily on the rise for over two decades, with clearly visible benefits for both students and teachers. Good examples of using technology in classrooms include interactive displays, computers, smartphones, instant messaging, etc. That can be used in place of traditional learning materials at a fraction of the cost.

However, regardless of the benefits technology offers to any learning environment, some shortcomings cannot be overlooked. For instance, students are easily distracted by phones in class, losing out on learning a valuable subject. Besides, technology has also been used to provide readily accessible platforms whereby students can easily and affordably ask the question, “can I pay someone to write my paper?” These websites offer affordable and expert solutions for students’ assignments which are considered plagiarism, which is a breach of most institution’s rules.

Technology in The Classroom During COVID-19 and After

Technology has taken up a more prominent role in delivering quality education at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This change is characterized by the suspension of in-person classrooms for remote learning platforms. This change has cast some serious doubt as to whether the learning environment will ever return to normal. Research shows that the current changes to the learning environment will have a lasting impact on the education sector.

Understandably, when learning institutions re-open, whether they will adopt an in-person, a remote learning approach, or a hybrid of both is anyone’s guess. However, regardless of the approach a learning institution will adopt, technology will be at the forefront, which is guaranteed to alter the lifestyle college. Technology has proved that it can sustain remote learning and provide students with much-needed knowledge and skills in today’s highly competitive job markets. Below are ways technology has helped improve learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. They include:

Improved student engagement

Technology in the class provides students with a wide array of opportunities to actively participate in learning. This technology makes learning more enjoyable and interesting.

Option to personalize the learning experience

Technology allows both teachers and students to adopt various learning styles suitable to each of their unique needs. With remote learning facilitated by various technologies, students can schedule classes that best fit into their daily routine.

Better opportunities for collaboration

An added benefit of incorporating technology in education is the availability of a wide array of collaboration options. For example, instant messaging, video conferencing, social media, etc., provide students with platforms to communicate in real-time, either with fellow students or their respective teachers.

Opportunity to learn skills applicable to the digital world

With the current widespread use of technology in different areas of the economy, learning institutions can incorporate technology into learning to ensure students are familiar with current emerging technologies to prosper in today’s economy.

Increased accessibility to learning resources

The incorporation of technology in learning has increased the frequency where students access various educational resources. This can be through dedicated software, websites, social media platforms, among many others.

Automation

Technology can help teachers and students reduce workload by taking over some of the repetitive and tedious tasks. For instance, performance monitoring, and attendance software, can free up valuable time that can be used for teacher-student interactions.

These are just a few of the benefits technology has to offer at the height of the global Coronavirus pandemic. Nonetheless, despite the apparent benefits of technology, learning institutions should implement only those best suited to their student’s unique needs.
