Use This Year To Put Yourself And Your Health First

If the last year has taught us anything it is how important it is to look after ourselves and put ourselves first. Lockdown and the pandemic have caused weight gain, lack of exercise and also having people’s mental health decline more than normal. Sometimes you’ll feel that you can’t juggle everything and try to do everything you need to do like housework, look after the kids, hold down a job, socialize and anything else you do while also looking after yourself is impossible. However, as impossible as it may be, see if you can give some of the jobs to your loved ones, share the responsibilities, and then you can look at putting yourself first a bit more and making sure your overall health needs are met.

Health Tips

Eat The Right Food And Eat From The Earth

One of the basic things we need to look at which will actually help the rest of the jobs we have run smoother is eating right. When you are eating a healthy and balanced diet you will find you have more energy and feel so much better in yourself. There are simple things you can do which are making sure you eat things from the earth and by that we mean things that are grown or harvested. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes are great things to have in your diet, and making sure you have some of these each day. A few easy ways to start incorporating this into your diet if it isn’t foods you normally have a lot of is by having some fruits and vegetables with each meal throughout the day.

So for breakfast, if you are wanting to have yogurt or porridge, just chuck some berries or fruit on there. You can also try adding some chia and sunflower seeds for a little crunch and to add some extra goodness to your meal. If you find yourself wanting a mid-morning snack and you normally go for something like crisps or chocolate, try and switch it up for a piece of fruit. Sometimes when we think we are hungry we are actually just bored or even thirsty. So if you think about having an apple and you don’t want it and you just want to eat chocolate then maybe you aren’t hungry at all.

Then for lunch having something like a sandwich or jacket potato is a great choice as they are filling, but make sure you have some veggies in there or on the side in the form of a salad. They will help give you the nutrients you need to get through the afternoon slump and be just as productive in the afternoon as you are in the morning. The same applies to dinner if you are having steak, chicken breast, or even pasta. Make sure you have some veggies on that plate too and try to make sure some of those vegetables are green as well.

Keeping Fit And Losing Weight

One of the best things to start looking at now while the end is in sight for some normality to come back to us is getting back into your exercise routine and being active as much as you can. Also if you are wanting to lose weight you may want to look at implementing a weight loss plan. There are all different types of exercises out there and it doesn’t have to be something you feel embarrassed to do or that feels like a chore. If you enjoy going to the gym and using all the different equipment then you can do that but it isn’t for everyone. Some people would prefer to work out at home or sign up for an exercise class. There are all types of classes available to suit everyone, it could be pole, yoga, swimming, and you can also try something like cross-fit.

If you find the thought of any of these daunting you may want to start with the basic which always works and that is walking. Just go for a nice long walk each day, put your headphones in and try to increase your heart rate. If you keep at it and do it regularly throughout the week you will find that it can be very de-stressing especially if you are walking around nature. Then before you know it you will find yourself walking further and quicker. Walking up the stairs doesn’t get you out of breath anymore and your fitness levels have increased. Once you are starting to do this you can then look at upping your exercise game and trying some other forms of exercise to help you improve further.

Have Me-Time And Look After Your Mental Health

If you are a mum or just a very busy person you may find it hard to have me-time. This is time dedicated solely to you and helping you relax and recharge. Doing grocery shopping or housework on your own doesn’t count, you need to fully focus and relax. It may be that you can try having a bath, reading, doing something you enjoy like painting or crafts. The possibilities are endless and completely up to you. It is important to have this time as it can help you be better in other aspects of your life, when you are busy all the time and find yourself constantly stressing you will burn out. You can also help improve your mental health by practicing self-care and scheduling yourself some me-time. Meditation is a great way to help your mental health, retrain how you think and react to situations and you can even do this from apps now.

There are always supportive groups, charities, and even family members that can help with your issues if you are suffering from your mental health. The important thing is to reach out about it. Tell people how you are feeling even if that is your GP if you are looking for more support from a professional point of view. It may be that you need to deal with things at a more rooted level which will set off a chain reaction to help you improve and feel better and happier.

Do Not Overwork Yourself

Our jobs are important, yes, they pay the bills, keep a roof over our heads and fund our Starbucks addictions. However, there is more to life than work. Always make sure you are working to live and not living to work. Don’t let work take over your whole life so you are there late and on weekends and not spending time with your family and friends. There will always be another job but you don’t want to miss birthday parties, special moments and things you can’t get back. We are on this planet to enjoy life, explore what the world has to offer, and make connections with people that will last a lifetime. You don’t want to leave school and work yourself into the ground.

Socialising Is So Important

With the last year, we have found that we may not have seen our loved ones as much as we normally do and that can really take its toll. If you aren’t able to do it in person at the moment remember it only takes a second to pick up the phone. Your parents and grandparents will be lonely and missing you for sure. Take some time to give them a call, catch up and remind them how much they mean to you and how important they are. Not only will it be good for them it will be good for you as well. It will improve your relationships, give you joy and happiness as well as making sure you aren’t forgetting about them. It really doesn’t take much time at all and can mean so much.

It is the same with your friends, if you find you aren’t speaking to them as much as life is getting in the way, give them a call, go grab a coffee together and have a good catch-up. You can even get your exercise in at the same time by getting the coffees to go and having a walk around the park. If you are unable to meet them in person at the moment a great thing to try is to make things fun. Organize a quiz night with your friends, make it themed so people can dress up, have a couple of drinks and have fun with a question. You can even contribute so that the winner gets a prize for more incentive. It certainly won’t be the same as seeing them in person but it will make sure you are rekindling anything lost and showing them you are thinking about them and that they are important to you.

So these things will help you have the best year, putting yourself and your health first, making big changes slowly so they become part of your lifestyle and not just another fad diet. So start implementing them into your routine and take some action.
