A Visual Masterpiece: The Jungle Book

We were invited as a guest to view an advanced 3-D screening of Disney’s The Jungle Book.

When I told my daughter that we were asked to view an advanced screening of The Jungle Book, her squeals of delight made me very popular. The animated version of The Jungle Book has always been one of our favorites and we were both excited to see how Disney brought these lovable characters to life on the big screen.

From the moment the movie opens, you are drawn into a realistic jungle with colorful animals jumping off of the screen into your lap. The Jungle Book follows the story of Mowgli, a “man cub” and finding his place within the jungle.  The film starts 10 years after Bagheera found Mowgli and had taken him to live with the wolf pack.  Bagheera has always been close in Mowgli’s upbringing and after an unseasonably dry season, all the animals gather at “peace rock”.  This is a safe gathering place for all animals and normal rules and laws of the jungle do not apply. This is where we first meet Shere Khan, an evil, angry tiger and learn of his hatred towards man.  It is here at “peace rock”, that he smells the “man cub” and vows to hunt him once “peace rock” disappears.

Akela, head of the wold pack and the others, make the difficult decision that Mowgli must return to the man village if he wishes to live.  Akela and Raksha, have raised Mowgli and Raksha is devastated at the thought of Mowgli leaving but understands that it is best.

As Bagheera guides Mowgli towards the man village, they are separated and Mowgli must overcome obstacles and other creatures in the jungle who do not have his best interest at heart.  Along the way, Mowgli learns from a hypnotizing python, Kaa, how he came to be left in the jungle; King Louie, a giant orangoutang, who wants Mowgli to bring him the “red flower”; and a honey seeking bear, Baloo, who wants Mowgli to help him gather food for the winter.   Ultimately, Shere Khan does find Mowgli but not before Mowgli has found himself.  The Jungle Book is a heart thrilling film that will have you laughing, cheering and even possibly, shedding some tears.

The amazing Ben Kingsley voices the beloved panther, Bagheera and is narrator of the story. Bill Murray voices Baloo and has you immediately falling in love with the care free and fun loving bear.  Idris Elba voices Shere Khan, the vengeful tiger; Christopher Walken as King Louie, the giant orangutan; Scarlet Johansson voices Kaa, the giant python; and Lupita Nyong’o voices Raksha, the wolf mother.   It is the amazing casting of the voices of these animals that draw you in and have you forgetting that you are watching talking animals and more that you are watching Mowgli’s family.

Neel Sethi is the only real human performer in the film.  This young man brings Mowgli’s search for self discovery to life.  He is amazing.

The Jungle Book is a PG rated family adventure that will have you laughing, crying and cheering. Be sure to catch The Jungle Book in theaters today!
