Ranger Led Nature Hike

Caspers Wilderness Park

Join our Park Rangers Sunday mornings for an easy 1-mile hike on the Nature Trail. Hike runs 8:00am – 9:00am. The trail takes visitors through grassland, oak woodland, riparian and sandy cactus scrub communities. Meet at Old Corral Day Use area. Rain will cancel hike.

  • Fee: Free
  • Parking: $5 per vehicle
  • Wear comfortable clothing, hiking shoes.
  • Sunscreen, water and insect repellent are recommended.

The Mysterious World of O’Neill Regional Park

Have you ever wondered “where are all the wild animals in the park?” Visit a Show and Share Exhibit located next to the O’Neill Park Nature Center and discover mysterious clues animals leave behind. Make a wild animal track mold and enjoy nature crafts and games. Event runs 9:00am – 10:30am. Cost: Free Parking: $5 per vehicle.

Family Hike – Spring is a wonderful time to learn about our local nature. Join a park naturalist on a family hike at Crystal Cove State Park to learn about the plants and animals living in the park on Sundays, April 5 or April 12 at 9am. Meet at the Berns Amphitheatre (PCH inland at stoplight School-State Park follow the signs to the Campground.) $15 day-use fee.

Back Bay Science Center (BBSC) Community Day

Come explore the buildings and surroundings of the BBSC!   Event occurs every Sunday and runs 10:00am – 2:00pm. Talk to the City of Newport Beach staff and volunteers about ongoing research, education, & restoration projects. Get your fingers wet in our tide pool touch tank, tour the teaching lab and aquarium tanks, and do some bird watching. The Science Center is located just off of Back Bay Drive on Shellmaker Island (600 Shellmaker Rd). This program is free and no reservations are required.

Every Sunday! 12:45pm – 5:15pm.
Free fishing trip. Rental gear included. Reservations required as space is limited. One free child per paying adult.

Science Sundays with ExplorOcean

Back Bay Science Center

ExplorOcean offers families a fun, interactive hands-on experience to connect to the 7 essential principles of ocean literacy through Science Sundays at the Back Bay. Quick and engaging activities bring parents and children together as they make predictions, ask questions, problem-solve and think like scientists. Each month we will introduce a new theme based on one of the Ocean Literacy Principles. Program runs 10:00am – 2:00pm. Science Sundays are FREE and offered to children of all ages. Join us at ten and prepare to see your world in a whole new way! Program is ongoing, weather permitting.

On Sundays, follow ExplorOcean volunteers to the Back Bay Science Center to participate in their Community Day Program, hosted by the City of Newport Beach.

Clinic in the Park: One-Stop Shop for Health – The Clinic in the Park’s mission is to establish innovative community-based one‐stop shop for health model of health promotion. The Clinic in the Park is a transformative replicable strategy to integrate community health into the health care system, and ultimately improve health outcomes and decrease costs. Clinic runs the same hours as the Farmer’s Market (10:00am – 2:00pm) and is located behind it.

Free services include:

  • Health Screening, Treatments and Check-ups
  • Health Chat with Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Dietitians, Health Educators and other Specialists
  • Resources and Referrals (Insurance, Legal, Parenting, etc.)
  • Special Family Activities
  • Books, Booster Seats, Fresh Produce, Pedometers, Bicycle Helmets, First Aid Charts and More!

Farmer’s Market – Sundays at the Orange County Great Park are headlined by the fresh produce and fun at our Certified Farmers Market. Every week, rain or shine, the Great Park Certified Farmers Market features fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, handcrafted artisan products, live music and entertainment, and a selection of gourmet food trucks. Market runs 10:00am – 2:00pm. Free parking and admission.

Storytime with Cynthia Callard

Join us in our library for Storytime with Cynthia Callard on the 2nd & 4th Sunday of each month! For each storytime, a story will be chosen and read aloud for all to enjoy.  We encourage you to bring friends and family members of all ages. All of the stories that are read have a wonderful message of love and compassion fitting for all ages. On this day we will be reading Owl Moon by Jane Yolen. Event runs 1:30pm – 2:00pm. Program is free but a donation of $2-$5 gratefully accepted. Register online.

Wilderness Walkers

Laguna Coast Wilderness Park

Enjoy a wonderful, moderate 3-mile walk (535-ft. elevation gain) through Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. Catch views of the canyons and mountain ranges from the ridge top and then walk down to Barbara’s Lake, a hidden jewel and the only natural lake in Orange County. Hike runs 2:00pm – 4:30pm. Ages 12 and up. Hat, water and snack recommended for your comfort. Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, James Dilley Preserve (405 South to 133 south to stoplight at 73 turn-off; make a U-turn, go 1 block. Round Canyon Evening Hike

Come out and enjoy the evening with us on the Round Canyon trail. This trail meanders through an oak woodland and riparian area and provides a glimpse into a beautiful canyon along the northern edge of the Irvine city limits. The two and a half mile out and back route has a gradual incline the entire way out, but the hike is done at a moderate pace. Please bring water and wear sturdy shoes. This hike is suitable for children age 8 and up. This free program runs 6:00pm – 8:00pm. Register online. Driving directions emailed upon registration.
