Weekly Events in Orange County: January 26 – February 1, 2015

I have to share the wonderful experience I had at a couple outdoor events last weekend with my six year-old. We participated in the Canyon Explorers Critter Scene Investigation with Let’s Go Outside at Bommer Canyon. Miss Kelly kept the kids engaged for the entire 1-1/2 hour program. My son did not want it to end. We also hiked to Little Treasure Cove in Crystal Cove State Park to take advantage of a super low tide. We spent a fascinating two hours exploring the tidepools and caves that are often inaccessible. Both programs were free although parking was $15 at Crystal Cove. How fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful area with access to quality, low cost outdoor programs for our families.

This week you can take advantage of Target Free First Sunday at the Children’s Museum at La Habra and at the Bowers and Kidseum museums. There are several evening family hikes this Saturday and Sunday to take advantage of the full moon. And don’t forget about the monthly Weekends at the Nix program this Saturday on American Indian stories, toys and games. Enjoy your week!

Art is valued and appreciated for all sorts of reasons and to honor this day, Pretend City has planned a variety of activities to inspire your little “heart-ist”!

  • Smart Art: Artwork can reflect the artist’s emotions or it can inspire emotions in the viewer. Today children will have the opportunity to do both during this activity time!
  • Good to Grow Game: Photography is another form of art. This art form is a great way to discuss emotions with your child. Today we will use Today I Feel Silly and real photos of children as our springboard to introduce children to emotions and play a matching game.
  • Paint Play: Colors can often evoke feelings. Today children will have an opportunity to pair a color with a feeling. Children will create take-home “Feelings Cards”. These cards will be a great way for your child to remember and express their emotions.

Activities run 10:00am – 4:00pm and are included with museum admission (Adults and Child 1 and over: $12.50, Infant to 12 months: Free).

Sunday, February 1: Super Bowl Soiree – Fans with face paint, a practice field, and jerseys of your favorite team colors will fill Pretend City today as we celebrate the Super Bowl! Today children will feel like they’ve just scored a touchdown as they get excited about the sport of football through these fun activities:

  • Smart Art: Today in the art studio we will explore football colors and symbols! Children will be able to make jerseys representing their favorite team and decorate their very own football helmet.
  • Fit Family Fun: Children will experience what it’s like to train and prepare for the big game as they participate in family fun football drills and obstacle course in our very own “practice field”.
  • Sensational Story Time: These football stories will educate your child about the basics of football, from the gear to the field and every move in between.

Activities run 10:00am – 4:00pm and are included with museum admission (Adults and Child 1 and over: $12.50, Infant to 12 months: Free). Wear your favorite football jersey to receive $1 off general admission!
