This weekend is the first weekend of the Dana Point Festival of Whales. Numerous weekly events are going on in and around the city of Dana Point to celebrate the annual arrival of the whales. See the website for complete information. Also, there are several full moon hikes for families this week that begin on Thursday. Enjoy your week!

Spring Carnival at Anaheim Indoor Marketplace (March 5 – 8)

17th Annual Spring Carnival occurs March 5th – March 8th in the front parking lot. 50,000 people in attendance. Vendor Booth opportunities, Live Music, Clowns, and Carnival Rides. Event runs 2:00pm – 11:00pm.

Children’s Museum at La Habra

Our mission
is to encourage enthusiasm about learning in a hands-on environment that opens the world even to the youngest child. Our museum features 7 galleries and 14 different hands on exhibits, many of which remain unique to the field today. In addition to these exhibits, an outdoor dinosaur topiary and historic 1942 caboose, the Museum features an exhibit which changes 3 times a year. The Children’s Museum welcomes local, national and international visitors. Children can ride a kid-size carousel, take a walk in T-Rex’s footprints, pet an Arctic fox, pump gas, drive a bus, dress up and perform, and dig for fossils all in one afternoon! The fall exhibit is Destination: Space and it runs through March 8.

Wednesday, March 4: Little Picasso Family Art Center – Make a “paint” date every Wednesday (11:00am – 3:00pm) at the Museum for lots of messy time exploring color and texture! There are easels, washable paints, brushes and paint smocks ready for little artists to use. This is a drop in art studio and subject to change. All programs free with paid admission (Kids and Adults $8, La Habra residents $7, Kids Under 2 Free).

Thursday, March 5: Tiny Tigers Taekwondo – Join Master Yang for an introduction to martial arts for your little guy or girl the first Thursday of each month at 10:30am. This parent & me program teaches not only self-defense but joyful living through shared family experiences. RSVP to (562) 383-4236. LEGO Travel Adventure runs January 17 – May 10, 2015. Embark on a travel adventure with LEGO at the Discovery Cube Orange County! You can go anywhere over land, sea, and air by creating extraordinary vehicles to take you where you want to go! To go on a travel adventure to exotic locations, you need to think creatively, plan, and build vehicles to move through all types of terrain, including mountains, oceans, jungles, deserts and more! Where will you go? What will you build? How will you get there? Join us at the Discovery Cube Orange County to find out!

National Geographic Presents: Earth Explorers runs January 17 – May 3, 2015. Travel to the wildest places on earth in National Geographic Presents: Earth Explorers. This hands-on exhibition allows you to let your imagination run wild as you become an explorer of the world, taking part in adventures to discover new science and technology. Come follow National Geographic’s explorers as they venture off to dangerous and remote parts of the world!

The newly renovated Kidseum is high-tech and interactive with a focus on its new mission, “Igniting imagination through exploration,” stressing the excitement of art and archaeology. Be sure to check out the new “Glow Cave” with its fun art making activities, ride the magical Wells Fargo stagecoach through time in the “Green Screen Time Machine,” and explore archaeology like never before in our new Archaeology Lab. There will be a lot of visual stimulation and engaging education with new smart tables, smart boards and computers.

Sunday, March 8 – Lecture & Book Signing: Mystery of the Giant Masks of Sanxingdui – This event takes place at the Bowers Museum at 2002 N. Main St., Santa Ana. 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM in the Kershaw Auditorium. LECTURE & BOOK SIGNING of Mystery of the Giant Masks of Sanxingdui. Presented by Icy Smith, author, educator and publisher, East West Discovery Press, and Gayle Garner Roski, illustrator and artist. This unprecedented children’s story offers a glimpse into the lost civilization of Sanxingdui in Sichuan Province, China. Villagers come from faraway lands to admire the bronze masks and trade for the highly prized bronze wares. However, Sanxingdui faces danger when its people hear rumors of a foreign invasion. Wednesday, January 21 – March 13, 2015: Mindfulness for Children Class. This 8-week class series helps children (ages 4-6) explore self awareness, kindness, compassion and self-control.  Each class will include either an art activity or a mindfulness exercise designed to encourage positive behavior.  Children will also practice identifying feelings, effective communication and problem solving, as they recognize the benefit that mindfulness can bring to their lives.

  • Time: Meets twice per week, every Wednesday and Friday from 3:00 – 3:30p.m.
  • Play Partner: Sandee Bandettini MS, MFT, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist that offers counseling and classes on mindful ways to live healthy and happy lives.

Monday, March 2: Celebrate Read Across America! – Celebrate Read Across America Day at Pretend City on March 2, 2015. NEA’s Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. This year, the chosen book is the Seuss classic, Oh, The Places You’ll Go. Oh, the Places You’ll Go when you read!

  • Sensational Story Time: Join us in the library every hour for a reading of Oh, The Places You’ll Go. See what adventures are in store for your little ones as we map out the places they would like to travel to!
  • Good to Grow Game: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” What direction will you choose to go in? See you can make it through the Seussville maze!
  • Picture Perfect: Let your child share their dreams in this fun and interactive photo op with the Seussville characters!

Don’t forget to swing by the art studio to make your very own high flier!

Grown-up Tip: Looking for a fun way to travel the United States without the travel? Visit Seussville and play the “Oh The Places!” Game with your school aged child. They will have fun testing their knowledge of the states. Activities runs 10:00am – 4:00pm and are included with museum admission (Adults and Child 1 and over: $12.50, Infant to 12 months: Free). Dress up as your favorite Dr. Seuss character to receive $1 off general admission!

Wednesday, March 4: Celebrate Purim! – Purim is one of the most festive Jewish holidays of the year. The annual celebration includes eating sweets and treats, masquerades, costumes, and all sorts of merriment! In honor of this joyous occasion, visit us for fun activities that will let you share in the traditions of the holiday with your family. Activities will include:

  • Cooking up Cultures: Take an imaginative visit to a kosher bakery to see thousands of hamantashen, the preferred Purim treat, being prepared. See what goes into making these treats before tasting the delectable delights!
  • Smart Art: Go wild with your imagination and decorate your own gragger. These noisemakers are an important part of the Purim holiday.
  • Sensational Story time: What happens When It’s Purim? Families who would like to share the heritage or introduce their children to this festival will appreciate this engaging story time.

Don’t forget to take part in our closing Purim Day Parade! You can visit the art studio to make your very own masks to dress up your costume for this special parade at 4:50p.m. Activities runs 10:00am – 4:00pm and are included with museum admission (Adults and Child 1 and over: $12.50, Infant to 12 months: Free).

Thursday, March 5: Celebrate Chinese Lantern Festival! – Just as we celebrated the start of the Lunar New Year, we will celebrate the end with Pretend City’s very own Lantern festival. Colorful children’s lanterns will line the streets of our city.

  • Smart Art: Light the way to good fortune, happiness, wealth, and longevity with these Chinese Lanterns! Your children will sharpen their fine motor skills as they create and decorate lovely lanterns for your windows or doors.
  • Sensational Story Time: Lanterns and Firecrackers will take your child on a Lunar New Year’s adventure from start to finish!

Activities runs 10:00am – 4:00pm and are included with museum admission (Adults and Child 1 and over: $12.50, Infant to 12 months: Free).

Friday, March 6: Celebrate National Dentist Day! – If your child has been anxious about visiting the dentist, today is the day for you to visit Pretend City. Celebrate National Dentist Day with us for fun activities and role-playing. Dramatic play and experiences that allow children to become more familiar with dentists and the dentist’s office will help ease your child’s anxiety. Couple this with the following fun activities and your child will be asking you about their next dentist visit:

  • Smart Art: See how your teeth cleaning skills measure up to the work of a real dentist with a variety of art projects that will focus on dental health, hygiene, and knowledge.
  • Sensational Story Time: Let’s Meet a Dentist will share with children what it means to be a dentist.
  • Partner in Play: All day long visit the Dental Office to participate in play with a real dentist! They will teach you the ins and outs of their job while sharing the tools of their trade.

Activities runs 10:00am – 4:00pm and are included with museum admission (Adults and Child 1 and over: $12.50, Infant to 12 months: Free). Show receipt within the past 30 days of a visit to your pediatric dentist for $1 off your child’s general admission ticket.

Friday, March 6: Family Nutrition Friday: Wholesome Nutrition Never Tasted So Good! – Jessica Ishino returns to share her nutrition knowledge with children and grown-ups! Snack Attack is a hands-on game which will help children identify the snacks that are good and not-so good for your body. This activity will encourage children to make healthy eating choices throughout their day. They’ll be even more encouraged after sampling Juice Plus+ healthy gummies and bars. Parents will enjoy getting some quick tips and healthy ideas that can be made at home with their little ones. Activities runs 11:00am – 4:00pm and are included with museum admission (Adults and Child 1 and over: $12.50, Infant to 12 months: Free).

Sprit Kids – Cheer Classes presented by Pacific Coast Magic: Weekly every Friday, March 6th – 27th. Time: 11:00 – 11:30a.m. (class may run over, depending on children’s interest and ability). Specifically for:  Children 3 years of age and up; Grown-up supervision required

This March we have partnered with Pacific Coast Magic, an All-star Cheerleading company, to introduce our youngest cheer friends to this fun sport! Cheerleading is our most energetic class – not to mention the loudest! The tumbles, jumps, chants, and cheers gives your little one a healthy first step towards an active lifestyle. At the same time your child is learning teamwork, trust, and cooperation. Through the guidance of coaches from Pacific Coast Magic, your child’s skills and confidence will grow. Tumbles and movement teach coordination and balance, while the team environment builds trust. This will be a class you won’t want to miss!
