Happy Presidents’ Day! Take advantage of the kids being out of school on Monday and take them to the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Birthplace to see Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt all day. Admission is free on Monday. There are also several Lunar New Year celebrations around Orange County this week. In addition, on Saturday, Irvine Railroad is celebrating its anniversary and Tanaka Farms is hosting an Open House to welcome the new season. Enjoy your week!

Children’s Museum at La Habra

Our mission
is to encourage enthusiasm about learning in a hands-on environment that opens the world even to the youngest child. Our museum features 7 galleries and 14 different hands on exhibits, many of which remain unique to the field today. In addition to these exhibits, an outdoor dinosaur topiary and historic 1942 caboose, the Museum features an exhibit which changes 3 times a year. The Children’s Museum welcomes local, national and international visitors. Children can ride a kid-size carousel, take a walk in T-Rex’s footprints, pet an Arctic fox, pump gas, drive a bus, dress up and perform, and dig for fossils all in one afternoon!

Wednesday, February 18: Little Picasso Family Art Center – Make a “paint” date every Wednesday (11:00am – 3:00pm) at the Museum for lots of messy time exploring color and texture! There are easels, washable paints, brushes and paint smocks ready for little artists to use. This is a drop in art studio and subject to change. All programs free with paid admission (Kids and Adults $8, La Habra residents $7, Kids Under 2 Free).

Saturday, February 21: Mini Yogis – Enjoy some bonding time with your child and learn breathing and stretching essential to yoga. This class is designed especially for the parent/child experience! Free to CMLH Members & visitors with paid admission. Class size is limited. Please call (562)383-4485 to make your reservation. Class begins at 10:30am and is offered the 3rd Thursday of each month. Class is free with paid admission (Kids and Adults $8, La Habra residents $7, Kids Under 2 Free).

Engineer’s Week runs February 21 – March 1, 2015. Tinkerers and builders of all ages are invited to Discovery Cube OC to celebrate national Engineer’s Week! Future engineers will enjoy a week of exploring, creating, and building with hands-on activities in various fields of engineering.

Activities include:

  • 3rd Annual Parachute Competition: Build and test a parachute, daily prizes for the longest “hang-time”
  • Daily showings of the Forces & Motion stage show
  • Design and build a block tower
  • Snap Circuit building

Egg Drop Competition! Don’t miss your chance to join the annual Egg Drop Competition on February 28th, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm! Bring your homemade ETV (egg transport vehicle) and put it to the ultimate test as it drops from 20 feet in the air. Register Today!.

Guest Speaker Richard Stember, from NASA, will be conducting a presentation and Q&A regarding the Orion Launch that took place in early December 2014. Presentation takes place Saturday, February 28, 2015: 11:30 am & 1:30 pm.

LEGO Travel Adventure runs January 17 – May 10, 2015. Embark on a travel adventure with LEGO at the Discovery Cube Orange County! You can go anywhere over land, sea, and air by creating extraordinary vehicles to take you where you want to go! To go on a travel adventure to exotic locations, you need to think creatively, plan, and build vehicles to move through all types of terrain, including mountains, oceans, jungles, deserts and more! Where will you go? What will you build? How will you get there? Join us at the Discovery Cube Orange County to find out!

National Geographic Presents: Earth Explorers runs January 17 – May 3, 2015. Travel to the wildest places on earth in National Geographic Presents: Earth Explorers. This hands-on exhibition allows you to let your imagination run wild as you become an explorer of the world, taking part in adventures to discover new science and technology. Come follow National Geographic’s explorers as they venture off to dangerous and remote parts of the world!

The newly renovated Kidseum is high-tech and interactive with a focus on its new mission, “Igniting imagination through exploration,” stressing the excitement of art and archaeology. Be sure to check out the new “Glow Cave” with its fun art making activities, ride the magical Wells Fargo stagecoach through time in the “Green Screen Time Machine,” and explore archaeology like never before in our new Archaeology Lab. There will be a lot of visual stimulation and engaging education with new smart tables, smart boards and computers.

Monday, February 16 – Time Travel Attire: Event takes palce 1:30 PM – 3 PM on Mondays, February 16 and Sunday, March 29. Fee: Admission, plus $6 for every participating child. Members: Free admission; $6 for every participating child. Traveling isn’t complete without the right hat. Learn about the past and create your own ancient hat to wear. Then embark on an adventure through time on the Green Screen Time Machine. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Saturday, February 21 – Glow Cave Discoveries: Event takes place February 21 and March 28, 1:30 PM – 3 PM. Fee: Admission, plus $6 for every participating child. Members: Free admission; $6 for every participating child. Virtually explore the French caves of Lascaux on a smartboard, then visit the Glow Cave and create your own glowing cave painting to take home.

Tuesday, January 13 – February 24: The Little Red Hen Theater Education Program (7 Week Class)  – Come one, come all to the best show in town – where your child is the STAR! If your child loves to create scenes, develop stories, and design this is the production for them. Pretend City has partnered with Creative Kids Playhouse to provide a theater education program to our guests. This unique program utilizes classic stories to prompt children’s imagination. Children will work together to develop the characters, plot, and scenes of the show. Our first program focuses on The Little Red Hen, a classic folk tale about working together, farm to table foods, and family dinner time. Director Jennifer Estrada will lead children making every minute of rehearsal fun with games and songs and utilizing developmentally appropriate practices to support children at all levels of development. Children will learn to work together as a team, express themselves, and hone memorization skills. Come join the fun!

Class Session: Weekly every Tuesday, January 13th – February 24th

Class Time: Rehearsals (Tuesdays) at 1:45 – 2:30p.m.

Performance Day: Saturday, February 28th at 11:00a.m.

Specifically for: Children 3 – 7 (preschool & school age); Parents must remain on the premises.

Fee:    $134 for 7 week series (7 classes) includes all instruction, materials, a cast T-Shirt, rehearsal CD and major costume components.

Wednesday, January 21 – March 13, 2015: Mindfulness for Children Class. This 8-week class series helps children (ages 4-6) explore self awareness, kindness, compassion and self-control.  Each class will include either an art activity or a mindfulness exercise designed to encourage positive behavior.  Children will also practice identifying feelings, effective communication and problem solving, as they recognize the benefit that mindfulness can bring to their lives.

  • Time: Meets twice per week, every Wednesday and Friday from 3:00 – 3:30p.m.
  • Play Partner: Sandee Bandettini MS, MFT, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist that offers counseling and classes on mindful ways to live healthy and happy lives.

Monday, February 16: Celebrate Presidents’ Day (Open Full Day) – Hurrah! No school on Monday! Children know they have a holiday in February, but do they really know what Presidents’ Day is all about? Bring in the kids on Presidents’ Day where they’ll learn about this holiday honoring our country’s leader through engaging activities that are more than just fun.

  • Sensational Story Time: Presidents’ Day is a fun story that will introduce to the historical figures that this holiday celebrates!
  • Smart Art: Creating Lincoln’s log cabin and George Washington’s wig will get children excited about this very special holiday.
  • Life & Times: Life has sure changed since Colonial times. Children will have the opportunity to compare some of the chores children used to do to present day chores. They’ll have fun participating in one of the chores – like making handmade butter!

Activities run 10:00am – 5:00pm and are included with museum admission (Adults and Child 1 and over: $12.50, Infant to 12 months: Free).

Tuesday, February 17: Celebrate Mardi Gras! Calling all children to the Mardi Gras celebration of the year! Get ready to get your toes tapping and umbrellas in the air as we enjoy festive Mardi Gras music throughout the day with fun activities to match. This celebration of carnival and family will let you share in the traditions and culture of Mardi Gras in a family-friendly way. Activities will include:

  • Smart Art: Join us in the art studio as we explore the meaning of symbolic Mardi Gras colors and make icon pieces to complete your very own costume.
  • Café Creations: Visit the Café to learn about and “bake” your very own Kings Cake.
  • Carnival for Kids: From the floats to the beads your children will enjoy participating in their very own carnival. Designing their floats in the art studio and donning them during the parade!

Activities runs 10:00am – 4:00pm and are included with museum admission (Adults and Child 1 and over: $12.50, Infant to 12 months: Free). 

Thursday, February 19: Celebrate Lunar New Year! – Lunar New Year is an important tradition for every family to thoroughly cleanse the house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for good incoming luck. We will enjoy some great activities to celebrate with the children:

  • Smart Art: Dragon Dances are a performed during Lunar New Year’s celebrations around the world. Children will enjoy making their very own dragon to make dance at home!
  • Music and Movement: Lunar New Year is for celebrating and making noise. We will make a traditional Chinese drum and play them while dancing to traditional Chinese music.
  • Symbols in a Second: Children will enjoy learning a fable of the Zodiac Animals and finding out what animal sign they are. A special take-home sheep activity will remind them of the zodiac animal for the year.

Friday, February 20: Homeschool Field Experience Day – Once a month we offer homeschool students unlimited access to our interactive exhibits offering learning through fun experiences. A field experience to Pretend City Children’s Museum offers your students a learning experience through hands-on educational play. The Pretend City environment allows you to create a plethora of curriculum and activities to surround your students with challenging problems and absorbing questions.

  • Admission Time: General Operating Hours (10:00a.m.-5:00p.m.)
  • Specifically for: Preschoolers (3-5 years), Kindergarteners (5-6 years), School Ages (6+ years); Grown-ups
