Western American Railroad Museum

Vehicle provided on behalf of Kia

Every kid loves trains. Ever since my boys were toddlers, they have loved everything about trains, and that love never seemed to end as they have gotten older. While planning our OC to Las Vegas road trip, I was looking for some new places to explore, and the Western American Railroad Museum came up on my radar. I had never heard of it before, and it is located in Barstow (just a quick stop on our way to Vegas), so I made plans to bring the kids to visit it.

When we arrived at the railroad museum in our Kia Sorento, my boys squealed with delight. Outside of the museum were multiple train cars just waiting for my boys to explore. By the time that we had reached the museum, it was right around noon, and the hottest part of the day. The temperatures were peaking above 110 degrees, but that didn’t stop the boys from wanting to walk around and look at the train engines.

The boys climbed all over the train engines and loved every minute. The heat didn’t seem to bother them because they were so immersed in their love for trains. I let the kids take their time looking at the trains before encouraging them to go inside of the museum to cool down.

That was when I realized that the museum was closed. I had expected the museum to be open on a weekday afternoon, but it is only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. Since the museum was closed on the day we visited, it is a great excuse to come back the next time we are driving through Barstow.

The Western American Railroad Museum was my kids favorite part of our road trip, and I highly recommend families taking the time to stop and admire the beautiful trains outside of the museum. If you visit during the summer, you’ll want to bring plenty of water, and a small towel – the train engines are hot to the touch. After visiting the museum, the very first Del Taco is just a short drive from the museum where you can get the Barstow Taco! The museum is located at 685 N 1st Ave, Barstow, CA 92311.

After visiting the museum, we continued on our epic OC to Vegas road trip across the desert.
