What Should Toddlers Have in their Closets?

Buying clothes for toddlers can be tricky. At that age, they grow very quickly, so you don’t want to spend loads of money on clothing that they’re going to outgrow just a few months later, having never worn. Yet you also don’t want to be stuck in a situation where they have nothing suitable to wear. One tactic to try is making sure that your little one has all the key clothing categories covered but not too much duplication of those items.

To help you out, here’s a list of some of the main items of clothing all toddlers should have in their closets.

Comfy leggings

Kids tend to do a lot of crawling and running around, so comfy leggings are a must. Look for pairs made with soft and breathable fabric that’s flexible enough to move with toddlers no matter what they get up to. These can be worn under skirts or simply with a t-shirt and dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Everyday t-shirts

T-shirts are a wardrobe staple at pretty much every age, so stock up on a few for your little one. Opt for a breathable fabric that’s gentle on the skin in a few different colors to match the rest of their closet. It’s helpful to have a mix of short and long-sleeved options to suit the weather year-round, which can also be layered up if necessary.

Cute summer dresses

As the weather gets warmer, you’re going to want some airy dresses to keep your little girl cool. You can find adorable smocked baby dresses that are suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions in a range of colors and patterns. For boys, shorts are a fantastic alternative for summer days. Don’t forget the sunglasses!

Cosy outerwear

At the other end of the scale, when winter sets in, you’ll want some snug outerwear to keep toddlers warm. This includes a cosy coat, waterproof rain jacket, plus a scarf, hat and gloves to ensure all their extremities stay toasty. If you live in a region that sees a lot of snow, a special baby snowsuit is a must.

Swimsuit

Whether you’re heading to the beach or the pool, your toddler is going to need some swimwear in their closet. Look out for special fabrics which protect delicate skin from UV rays, as well as long-sleeved rash vests that provide extra protection. You can also get waterproof sandals to protect your feet when going into the sea.

A smart outfit

It’s a good idea to have at least one smart outfit your toddler can wear at more formal events. Whether it’s a sparkly dress or a neat little suit, kids are sure to love dressing up for the occasion – and they’re bound to get plenty of compliments too!

Snuggly pajamas

Last but not least, a snug pair of pajamas or two is essential for helping toddlers get a good night’s sleep. It’s best to have lightweight options for summer and cosier styles for colder evenings. In both cases, the fabric should be soft and breathable for maximum comfort all night long.
